El Capitan (Yosemite) 19 miles @ 4900 feet elev. gain.

  • May 13, 2012 · 7:00 AM

Distance 19 miles

Elevation gain estimated @ 4900 feet.

Difficulty **very strenous***

Meeting time 7am

meetup fee $ 1

Park entrance fee $ 20 per car, unless you have the nat'l parks pass

I have not hiked to El Capitan, I do not know what the trail will look like beyond the top of Yosemite Falls. This will be a long day of hiking.

Important notes!!!

**Yes this is Mothers Day.

** You should have done similar hikes,

**7am start means you have to leave Bay Area around 3am.

**there are campsites avail. for Sunday night. http://www.recreation.gov/camping/Upper_Pines/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70925&topTabIndex=Search

**no 100% guarantee I will do this hike, bad weather , snow on the trail, etc. may cancell or I may choose a diff. hike.

If you made a campsite reservation and I have to cancell you can either go on your own or the cancellation fee is $10 bucks for the site, but you can check that out when you make a reservation.

**this is a long strenous hike, the first 4.6 miles will have about 3000 feet elev. gain.

** First Break, at the first intersection after about 4 miles, this is close to the top of the falls, we get into the forest, there is a creek and trail signs. If you are struggling with the hike this is the time you can bail out and just go to the top of the falls. **I will wait / break for about 15-20 min if you are a lot further behind (we will have moved on if you don't see us there) you will have to just visit the top of the falls and turn around, I am not a really fast hiker and will take some pic's along the way, last time it took around 2 hrs 30 min to get to that intersection. the route to the top of the waterfalls should be well travelled and we return this way, I don't feel like I am abandoning you. I will bring map copies but the route to the top is easy to follow.

we may run into a few snow patches, a meadow we pass through could be very water logged and may cause some wet feet, pack a small towel extra socks just in case.

This is not a hike where you drive up, hike, drive home, that would be a long day with possible traffic on the way home, keep that in mind.

Route: starting from the yosemite falls shuttle stop we go up the trail to the top of yosemite falls, and continue on Hetch hetchy trail for about 0.6 miles and then turn left onto the trail to El Captian. We return via the same route,

poss. detour to the top of eagle peak and or the side trip to the viewing point on top of the falls, (this would add to the total mileage)

Trail map (also shows meeting point shuttle stop number 6)

Looks like you had a great time! Glad to see it! Just realized that you didn't even need to go through Ribbon Meadow... ahh the joys of a new season! Do you have details on the number of downed trees and where they were? I'm playing catch up with conditions here in Wawona.

At about half way up Yosemite Falls is a spot where water usually trickles out of the rocks. It's fast enough to collect water from and run a Steripen. Also, at 3/4 of the way up on the falls (near the tree line) there is a fast running stream on the right side of the trail that can be pump filtered or collected. Good time/place to refill if it's hot that day. Then there's also the main river up top.

Current conditions update for Eagle Peak:
Sounds like it is good to Yose Falls lookout, but snow after that. coworker posted the following unofficial report: "90% to 100% snow beyond the rim with some dry patches in open areas. Very wet."

This is Eagle peak, not El Cap. As I said before, Ribbon holds snow. Keep up to date by calling the valley wilderness center for more specific info as the date approaches. No guarantee they will have patrolled it again, but probably.

Thanks all! these tips are very helpful. What are some good sites for checking the recent or previous year trip reports. For e.g., in WA www.wta.org and www.nwhikers.net are great for hiking TRs.

Thanks Patrick for gps route, that will help if we run into snow and the trail disappears, my 19 miles are calculated without any side trips from the lower falls bus stop, I will up the elev. gain to 4900, I will add a note about the poss. soggy meadow as well

You'll probably hit snow in Ribbon, even in this light snow year and early melt. Just make sure to have your navigation skills. Last year was much bigger year than this, but we had people getting lost and calling for help well into June. If you lose the trail (unlikely since you are experienced) - go back the way you came.

Also add mileage walking to and from the trailhead....

Wish I could meet up with you guys, but it will be my first day of work... Here's the trip. http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=1555121

Strenuous going up and down the falls - prepare for wet feet in Ribbon Meadow. Snow stick in there too, but it is an early melt with not much snow. Should be ok, but the trail might disappear for a bit. Add 1 mile for Eagle Peak.

    Anyone interested in carpool?

I did this day hike a few years ago in October. It's a fun hike. I recommend stopping for lunch at Eagle Peak and packing your own water. Trying to filter water at the top of Yosemite Falls might be a little dangerous...there are railings to keep you from getting into too much trouble at the top. Have fun!

Just went to Yosemite last weekend. The weather was great. There was still some snow on the ground once you got up to a certain elevation but again, the weather was very nice.
