Lunar Eclipse (30%) full moon hike, Castle peak, basin peak, @ 10 miles 2500 ft

  • Jun 4, 2012 · 1:45 AM

Meeting time:  1:45 am  (Monday morning)

Distance est. 10 miles

Elevation gain est. 2500 feet.

The plan is to Hike up under the Full Moon to Castle Peak and Basin Peak and watch the partial eclipse along the way, the shadow will cover about 1/3 third of the moon around 3am.

The first 45 minutes will be through the woods and we get a more un-interrupted view of the moon once we reach castle pass.

From Basin Peak we should have a fairly easy descend to the Pct in the valley, we follow the pct past peter grub hut, I do consider to return via Andesite Peak (should be a use trail)

**Important notes**

the "**use trail"*** up to Castle Peak will be steep at times,

some muddy trail sections could be possible

snow, we may run into some patches,

CHILLY NIGHT possible, make sure to bring WARM HAT, GLOVES etc. if you get cold easy.

some slippery trail sections, (I think mostly on the way up)

the trailhead is about 2 hrs 20 min from Walnut Creek.

bring a head lamp

Hiking poles if you use them

water, food, etc.

You should have done hikes in the mountains before, there will be some off trail / use trails, those are not your maintained bay area trails, the trails can be steep, slippery, rocky....

please review, no need to print I will bring a sign in sheet

Take exit 176, for boreal, and you should see a sign for the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) before the exit as well, after going down the exit turn left, under the freeway, and go straight, the road should turn right (once you get past the exit / freeway entrance) going up the hill into the forest, it may be unpaved, go up that road and it will turn left, we will try to park just after that left turn, there should be room I parked there before.

call me if any problems I will send my phone number to all on the yes list the day before.

I assume the road to castle pass will be open, if not we park on the other side of the freeway towards the parking lot for the PCT

The weather didn't read the bio that we were trying to accomplish ... so I took it down a star ... we made the best of it though ...

This was a lot of fun, marred only by the bad weather and the swampy condition of parts of the trail. I especially liked the hasty off-trail descent from the ridge.

epic weather fail, came in too fast too soon, good thing we did cut it short after we passed just below castle peak, there was no need to continue, cold, foggy, strong wind,

I'd like to join a carpool from south bay to share gas costs, if anyone is willing to share.
Chris: what elevation is the peak/trail head?

I don't know what the camping options are, but camping before / after is always a options if someone wants to do that. I am sure there is a campground within 10 -20 miles.

So... maybe this has been addressed but: what are the camping options near the trail head?
