Yosemite NP, Cathedral lakes, sunrise lake, @14 miles @ 2500 feet elev. gain

  • August 11, 2012 · 7:15 AM

Meeting time 7:15 am ( arrive, early/ on time, bus won't wait, leaves around 735 est.)

Distance around 14 miles

Elevation gain est. 2500 feet

Meetup fee $1

***Park entrance fee $ 20 per car, unless you have the nat'l parks pass**

As usual with this type of hike I will be picky who to add

There will be  questions popping up when you rsvp, (add to waitlist) make sure to answer them

I will limit the group to around 15

** You should have done similar hikes,

**7:15am (meeting time) means you have to leave Bay Area around 3am (or earlier depending where you live) Driving out and back the same day is not recommended, it would be a long day, ***

***You can look for a campsite and stay the night before / after ***

***I will camp after the hike in the valley***

*** you have to make your own camp accomodations, that means look for cancellations, or camp outside the park.** once you are added to the hike*

We meet at the sunrise lakes trailhead, and catch the free shuttle bus around[masked]am,  to the cathedra  lakes trailhead.

JMT(john muir trail) for 3 miles, then a short side trip to the lower lake, back to JMT to sunrise camp, where we leave the JMT and head over to the sunrise lakes (maybe a quick swim, will see) and coninue to tenaya lake, where the cars are parked.

Waiver: please review, no need to print, I will bring a copy to sign.,

this is not a beginner hike

Make sure to bring plenty of water, around 3 liters I would say

bring some food, snacks

sunscreen, (maybe a hat)

dress in layers

cheap rain poncho (around a dollar at target and other places), they are small and fit easy in your pack,

bug spray, (hopefully mosquito season will be near the end, but who knows)

and all the other stuff you usually bring on this type of hike,

Meeting Point / sunrise trailhead (west end tenaya lake)

Meteor shower, Saturday night, perfect timing, the peak of the shower will be Saturday night, best viewing time I hear is 12-1am (after 1am the moon rises)
I am planning on setting the alarm clock and head for stonyman meadow at midnight, take a blanket, pillow, and lie down on the wooden boardwalk for a while to watch the show,

I am interested in camping both Friday and Saturday nights. Would like to depart from San Francisco after 6pm Friday as I will need to work. Let me know if anyone has room in the car. I can meet you along the way and share in transportation expenses and driving. Thanks!

as I keep saying, with enough looking you most likely find a cancellation site in yosemite, booked a site for one member on the yes list, I had seen days for every day for the next 14 days (several times 3-5 days in a row)

I hope we can do this hike together. There is another group that is planing camping there for the weekend, only for women (Bay Area Ridge Trail +more they reserved a space for camping, the cost is $6, per night, so maybe we can organize carpooling and camping there after our hike with Chris. please let me know , so we can reserve our space with this group.

Yes, you would have to limit the number or divide up into groups with one person in charge as there are spots where some may need to scramble on all fours over the granite faces. It is beautiful though and much cooler and interesting. Have a good trip, Chris.

Thanks for the note Carol, it sounds interesting (I love xc, done at desolation wildern. and other places) but if I do that I have to cut the group size to 8 (think that is the allowed group size for off trail travel)

FYI! Something to consider! I just hiked out the Cathedral Lake trail and it was very hot and dusty, steep and not real pretty. We did a XC hike up the drainage over the saddle that you can see from the highway 120, just above Tenaya Lake in to Cathedral which was more interesting. We then out the regular trail.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
