Hi folks,

Area hikers have often expressed interest in my backpacking adventures and getting more into backpacking. So I put together some in-field workshops. Here's the info if you're interested.

Thanks again for the feedback from some of you in super fab!

Happy trails,

Getting Deeper into the Wilderness: An In-field Sierra Backpacking Workshop
Full info: http://skip.rootactio...

Time for another wondrous backpacking season in the California wilderness, without doubt some of the most beautiful natural areas of the world!

Get deeper into the wilderness by learning how to backpack, or strengthening your backpacking skills, on this moderate three full-day trip into the Sierra--including a broad range of instruction for beginning to intermediate backpackers.

Workshop I: Thursday (evening) to Sunday, May 6-9, 2010 (with Saturday, May 1, orientation session)

Workshop II: Thursday (evening) to Sunday, June 10-13, 2010 (with Saturday, June 5, orientation session)

May and June are fabulous times to get into the Sierra, arguably the very best: waters are roaring, plant life is greening and blooming, temperatures are warming (but not roasting), and summer visitors are still at home with their calendars.

Getting Deeper into the Wilderness is for hikers who want to extend their appreciation of being in nature through overnight wilderness adventures and for backpackers who want to strengthen their skills.

The workshop includes:

• Preparatory and skill handouts
• An instructional and logistical three-hour, pre-trip orientation
• Pre-trip support
• A guided, three-night trip to the Sierra (with one full layover day/night), including core and optional instruction on a wide range of wilderness skills

Topics include: Overview of wilderness recreational activities, The basic geology of the Sierra, Pre-trip conditioning, Trip planning, Gear selection, How to borrow, rent, make, and share gear, Packing, Other pre-trip preparation, "Leave No Trace” principles, Trailhead camping, Hiking with a pack, Trail protocol and etiquette, Map use, route finding and selection, Food planning and wilderness cooking, Food storage, Water filtration, Hydration, Campsite selection, Fire skills, Preventing and handling emergencies, Doing what a bear does in the woods, Ropes and knots, Bug management, Bear encounters (and why you don't need to be afraid of bears), Post-trip tasks, and more.

Special interest topics may be arranged by request, such as: Effective hiking pole use, Going off-trail
Scrambling, Nature photography, Group decision-making, Wilderness yoga, and other fun stuff.

Costs

• Cost for the workshop is $225 per person (which includes workshop materials and permit fees).
• If you find the cost prohibitive, you may self-select to pay a discounted fee of $195 instead.
• If you would like to be part of the group meal plan, there is an additional $25 fee to cover food and fuel.
• Additional discounts are possible in exchange for help with aspects of trip coordination.
