Dinner at Indus Valley

Hello Suppers, Ok.. so Indus Valley is totally cool with a group of 15-17 coming in and raising hell by ordering off the menu (who'da'thunk it??!) . So let's just be a little crazy next week, and get together for some excellent, Indian home-cooking. Its really more about the people than the venue (I am a huge foodie at my core so I need to be reminded sometimes) but I love the feeling of a big, chaotic group of Suppers getting together to blow off some steam and enjoy a fun night out.

We will return to the Cecil after I make peace with them, I just need a little time to process, but I will plan something for a group of 10, so we can play by their rules and yet still order off the menu. To be honest, their food just sounds excellent, and I'd like to see for myself if they are really 'all that'.

Hope to see you all at Indus Valley!!

Last minute question: how much cash should I bring?

Indus has $14.95 buffet on week-end lunch, so would it be reasonable to expect $24.95 buffet (family style)? If yes, would $40 be sufficient enough to cover food, one drink + tax + tip? Of course, I'm willing to go by the flow. Just checking. Thanks.

Unfortunately, it looks like I won't be able to make it after all so want to make sure those on the waiting list can get in on this ASAP. Next time!

As a vegetarian I do not like family style meals since most items will contain meat. Hopefully the next Supper West Siders meet-up won't be family style.

Hi Incidentally I think you will be missing out.. there are a ton of great veggie options there and I am sure we will be ordering many of them

I agree with Jenine, breaking up the group to avoid the pre-fix dinner menu will be an uncomfortable situation with the restaurant. And we could end up with each group at opposite ends of the restaurant. I think we send a message to the restaurant, "thanks but no thanks." My vote, cancel the reservation and move to another venue.

Jenine: Thanks for your efforts! No, problem. We can still enjoy our dining out. Wait for the new plan - may be a better one.

hi, So now I am pissed at The Cecil, and I am one click away from cancelling altogether, they will not allow us to order a la carte with a group of 10 or more, so they will only take us on the BS set $60 (drinks not included) menu. with that said, I think i will need to cancel it, and then reschedule and close the meet up at 10. Sorry about all the changes, folks, I am pretty new at this and I guess the economy is still strong enough that restaurants feel they can turn away large groups.

      That's a great idea!!

      February 10, 2014

    • Jenine

@ Rupa... that is the logical thing to do, but they would probably kill me if I tried to make a reservation at 2 different tables for 9, just to avoid the prix fix. Still thinking about what to do.. I like the feeling of a big group, I will probably find another place, most likely final update by eod tomorrow.

      February 10, 2014

  • Beverly

yeah...I do not want the 6o.00 prix fixe either,,,I hpe that we can all chose what we wish,,,

    February 9, 2014

  • Jenine

So I asked the Cecil for a set menu and they gave me a prix fix of $60 w/o drinks. I Iooked at the menu, and frankly I would much prefer to order a la carte. They also need to put the entire order on 1 bill, but will accept 4-5 different methods of payment. I am already anxious of doing the calculation at the end, (tip will be included in the final bill but not tax) and I fully expect that everyone will keep their order, and personal calculation + drinks + tax+ tip in their heads, and are prepared to pay cash at the end. I want people to have a great time, order up, drink a ton but then be responsible and reasonable about paying for it in the end. I also want people to have the option to order an appetizer and a glass of wine, and not be on the hook to split the bill with the entire table.

I also prefer to order a la carte.

I prefer a la carte, choosing my own dishes from the menu, not their rather expensive $60 pre-fixed.

Here is their menu for your review.

I don't mind a prix fix dinner but would prefer what you have done in the past with an amount of $30 =/- and not $60 w/o drinks (and this does not include tip, correct?) For that type of arrangement I'd prefer to order from the menu as you have described. I like your idea of venturing back to modest places in the neighborhood. If we can find a place with round tables that would be nice and foster conversation.

    Thanks for all your efforts!

I think that as a larger group the post-dinner accounting can be difficult. At the last gathering I was there with a couple others trying to figure out what we owed when the others from our part of the group had already left. Let's all remain until the tab is fully paid so that the last ones to view the check don't have the possibility of being burdened with what others should have covered.
And I agree with Patty about the round table/s if we can find.

Separate checks for small groups sounds great!

    February 7, 2014

  • Jenine

Yes due to the holiday, thank you Delia. Also, we should figure out a good solution for the bill thing.. Any thoughts? I am thinking that for every 3-4 there is a separate check? Would love to hear other ideas around this...

    February 6, 2014

yes..small groups for the check work well!!
