This meetup/support group is for minority mothers who have been blessed with the honor of raising special needs kids.
I have two sons, My oldest Cameron is 9 and was diagnosed with PPD-NOS in 2007 on the autism spectrum. My youngest son is 5 named Marselles and he has a rare disease called eosinophilic esphaghitis.. One day on Amazon I was ordering books on ABA therapy and I typed in Minority Parents of Special Needs Kids parenting books, nothing came up, i kept searching and again nothing came up. I googled and alas nothing came up. As parents of special needs children the lack of support in our community whether it be because of cultural, media ignorance or lack of research is overwhelming. Having kids suffering from these disorders already is a long difficult journey but walking into a support group and not having anyone to relate is even harder. The fact remains, minority children are the number one kids who are abandoned, taken away, or abused because of lack of education, social , and economic pressures. This is open to everyone regardless of ethnic, religion, race etc. Its a safe place to openly voice your frustrations with a system that may not understand your choice , not to medicate, your style of discipline, or even your choice of treatment strategies... Lets network, support, swap horror stories, fundraise, advocate for our angels.
A friend once told me there is a special place in heaven for special needs parents.
