Learn To Surf Day in Cocoa Beach

Let's meetup in Cocoa Beach to learn how to surf!

This day will be for all beginner or newer surfers to introduce you to the basics of surfing, water and board safety and etiquette, and hopefully getting you infused with the surfing stoke for life!!

We hold these every couple of months and we usually get a great turnout. We spend the first half of the day totally dedicated to teaching, and then we put what we learn into practice the second half learning to balance and popping up.

Carol Ann will be there as the main "group" instructor, however, would love it if a few of you experienced surfers would come out and bring longboards and help out...

We will meet at Lori Wilson Park at 9:00am - a little South of Ron Jon's. This park has lots of free parking, showers, and bathrooms. There are two lots. We will park in the 1st lot as you are heading South on Atlantic.  Later in the day we will probably move further South as it gets crowded there in the afternoons.

We'll start on the beach with the basics of paddling and popping up, and then we'll spend some time in the white water practicing handling the board, paddling, sitting up, and popping up. By the end of the morning, you should be well on your way to surfing!

Ron Jon's opens at 8:00am for rentals and has foam longboard available for $10 for the day. I would recommend getting over to the East Coast by 8:00am so you can grab a board and be on the beach with us by 9am. We will start the "learning" session on the beach between 9:00am-9:15am.

Some of us may be staying over night and surfing all weekend. We usually head out to Coconuts or the Cape Canaveral Port or maybe this time we'll try Cocoa Village!! Then catch a morning surf session on Sunday before heading home. If you would like to spend the night, I recommend Econolodge. They are almost across the street from Lori Wilson Park and have reasonable rates. Tell them you are Carol Ann's surfer friend, and they will give you  a good rate. Phone number: (321)[masked]

I have 2 longboards available for anyone who'd like to use them instead of renting. Please email me if you'd like to reserve one.

Look forward to seeing you at Lori Wilson Park! Let's do this thing!!

Your Organizer, Carol Ann

It was a great day giving back to the sport I love. I enjoyed meeting everyone and was very impressed with the vibe in the water. I hope all of you starting out for the first time will continue pursuing this beautiful sport. One day hopefully you will be able to pass on what you have learned to someone else.
    Aloha,

Passing on the STOKE, awesome gesture you, Carol Ann and the rest of the instructors and helpers did. We thank you all. Mya and Aidan are hooked. They keep asking when we can go surfing again. We surfed again all day Sunday and without the great instruction this could have been a bad experience. Thank you all. We can't wait to get out there again, and we are praying for some good wave making weather here on the west coast of Florida :-)

I'm staying at the International Palms Resort next to the park. If you're staying overnight come on over, it's Pirate Festival weekend, lots of crazy people dressing up like Pirates and having a great time, vendors, food music etc. Open to the public. See everyone in the morning.

How far is it from Ron Jon to the beach, I don't think I can put a long board in my car :)

Its my birthday weekend, and now I know what I want for my birthday B-) I just started paddle boarding. I've always wanted to learn to surf. Is there an age limit, id like to bring my 8 and 11 year old son and daughter. I also have a 12 foot BOTE Paddleboard, should I bring that as well as rent smaller surf boards? Mooney

    April 26, 2014

    • Mooney

Will do, I'll probably rent 3 surf boards and also bring my SUP board for some fun later since were staying the weekend at a hotel next to the park. Should we ask for a particular size board or will Ron Jon know what we need for the group? thank you, Mooney.

      April 30, 2014

    • Carol A.

Hey Mooney, yes, they can recommend a size. Longboards are good for beginners, even if the kids are small. I would recommend 7 footers for your kids if they have foamies that size, or 8 footers.

If you really want to get into surfing this is very small investment for carrying your board on top of your car. I'm posting Ron Jons product... its in stock at the shop and cheap.

Date is more than a month away but I'm going to try and leave that weekend open... of course if there is any kind of swell I will be there.

Thanks Ship!! It would be such a help to have some experienced surfers come out and help me push people into the waves. I can only work with a couple people at a time so I really need more hands..

Kurt would come with me too and help out.

Will this be near a place I can rent a board? I live in Tampa and just started surfing and I don't own a board or have means of transporting a board from Tampa--so ideally if there is a place nearby that I can rent one close enough to walk to meetup point that would be great. Thank you for hosting this event! I am too trying to learn/improve my skills! Went to a weeklong surf camp in Dominican Republic and I am officially hooked! Glad to find like minded people in my backyard!

    April 20, 2014

    • Carol A.

What was the name of the surfcamp? Always like hearing about good surf camps

      April 21, 2014

    • Martina D.

Swell surf camp in Cabarete!! It was great for 900 bucks you get the week package which includes a private room(shared room was 750) surf lessons, board rental, breakfast every morning, transport to and from the beach, and dinner 3 nights a week. Even cheaper if you don't do the lessons! Great time! Even Steve-O from Jackass stayed there!

I will let you know for sure closer to date---so far my calendar is blocked--barring any unforeseen emergencies, I should be there!

This is gonna be a fun weekend!! Hope to see as many newer surfers as we've ever had this time around! Seriously guys... If you've been in this group for a year, and haven't come out to surf once, you should probably just take off and find something else to do.. Not to be rude, but this meetup is meant to bring people actually interested in surfing together. If you're not interested, and not surfing, you should just take a hike, if you're not gonna even try to ride...

    April 17, 2014

    • steven s

that was a good read... June is way off but I'm in. I will get a room on Friday night and stay the weekend. A local meet up would be cool.

      April 20, 2014

Awesome Steven, look forward to meeting you!! We do last minute surfs so stay tuned to the message boards. I'm in Cocoa beach almost every other weekend.

Also if anyone else is coming from Tampa Bay Area and would like to carpool, let me know! I don't mind being a driver or passenger with gas money!!
