Fall Nosara Costa Rica Trip

  • November 10, 2014 · 7:00 AM

We are are heading to Nosara, Costa Rica Nov 10th through the 16th. Nosara is a beautiful laid back yoga village in the jungle, with a great little non paved downtown, and one of the best beginner/intermediate beach breaks in Costa - Playa Guiones.

We have a deposit on Suite #3 - sleeps 3/4 - at this property now... www.kayasolsurfhotel.com and are looking to fill this unit and possibly expand to one of their larger units (although not many have a/c as this one does).

This property is awesome. It is affordable, flexible, has a pool, restaurant, live music at night, and hostel units, so I think it'll have an awesome open community surfer vibe. Plus it is one of the the closest properties I've seen to the beach. AND, there's a surf school ON the property for us to arrange some group guides/lessons and board rentals. Everything we need is right here.  SCORE!!!

Check it out here...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqMChGgS-TI&feature=plcp

You have two options to get to Nosara - fly into Liberia (flights around $750 with a 2.5 hour drive) or fly into San Jose (flights around $350-$400 with a 5.5 hour drive or take a commuter flight.  See below the organizer's itinerary if you'd like to match it.  Once there, you will not need a car.

If you have interest, we will need the full share (between $120-$200 for the 6 nights) to hold your spot in the home.

Contact Carol Ann at[masked] to make arrangements to pay no later than Sept 1st.

Plan to spend about $1000 to $1,200 for this 6 night trip with flight, room, food, transfers, surf gear, etc.

Beginners are welcome! These will be some of the best waves for learning you can get in the world!

Hey Carol Ann, Great pics! Looks like a lot of fun missed. How were the waves for the week? Did you have to travel to find waves? The pics of you, showed some nice waves.

    • Carol A.

Hey Pete! Waves were small for Guiones actually, But nothing like the reports were saying. Mornings were best with offshore winds and shoulder high for sure every day. It was an awesome time and can't wait to do it again!

Hey everyone! Glad y'all made it back safe and sound to the US! Still dreaming of waking to the sound of the howlers and birds and walking out to the beach with my surfboard.... meanwhile we endure 50 degree temps!!

Hey, I just posted a review of Juan's shop on Trip Advisor and am asking you guys to do the same. He doesn't advertise much but the reviews really help. Thanks!! Hope to see you all out surfing locally soon!

Hey guys.. I saw your plane take off over the beach and waved like crazy.. Did any of you see me out there in the lineup?!

    November 14

    • Tony

So you were that crazy woman jumping around on her board out there. I thought you were pretending it was a paddleboard or something .

      November 14

  • Carol A.

Tony, Liz, Bob, Joy, and Anthony....Had an incredible time with all of you. You are all awesome! Thanks for a great time and safe travels back.. Let's do this again soon... Maybe PR next...

It was a great time with good people! Thanks for all you did in setting this up and coordinating all of the activities while we were there. You're awesome!!!

Hey Tony, we are all here hanging out and planning to surf at dawn tomorrow at high tide. Probably a late afternoon sesh at mid to high tide. We will be at the pool mid afternoon. I'm in suite 3, feel free to knock!

  • Tony

Looking forward to seeing you guys tomorrow. Should be there early afternoon. Let me know where you guys are meeting for your afternoon session or dinner.

  • Carol A.

Yeah!!! Made the commuter flight and had a sundown surf sesh in my favorite place to surf in the world with awesome peeps!! So psyched to be back!!!!!

    1 · November 10

  • Joy

Yay! I'm up and catching my own waves. Had my first lesson this morning. Will probably go out this afternoon. What time are we meeting tonight?

  • Carol A.

Safe travels to everyone traveling out today!! Can't wait to meetup with everyone at the hotel bar tomorrow night!! One word of caution.... Do not bring anything out to the beach except your surfboard in Nosara... Hide your flipflops in the trees before you hit the sand. And lock up your valuables when at the hotel. There is petty theft in Nosara... Nothing major but you will lose anything you leave on the beach...

    1 · November 9

  • Carol A.

Cool Tony! You must be having a great time! Can't wait to get there! Yeah, I've looked at surf reports for surrounding beaches and looks like Camaronal, Ostional, and Samara might be more exposed and bigger breaks - and all of them are beach breaks so that's good. Most I think are within 30 minutes from Nosara. Even Playa Nosara looks better than Guiones this week! I will probably rent a car for the week. That would also allow us to explore snorkeling and some nature preserves without having to pay for a tour. I will bring softracks and some bungies for hauling boards.

    1 · November 8

  • Tony

We have rented a Suzuki Jimmy and are currently driving around in it. It has four seats but only petite sized adults will be able to fit in the back two seats. It definitely won't fit the entire group and we aren't there the entire time you guys are but we can use mine as an overflow or board hauler if you like.

    November 7

  • Carol A.

Hello All! It looks like its gonna be small in Guiones next week. I'm thinking of renting a car for a few days so we could get around to some other beaches. Would y'all be interested in splitting a car or a van?

    November 7

  • Tony

Sorry about missing the CC. I just responded to your email.

    November 3

  • Carol A.

Hey Nosara Trippers! I just sent those of you coming on this trip an email. Let's plan to meet at 8pm at the KayaSol restaurant/bar Monday night and we'll do some coordinating there. Safe travels and see and surf with you soon!! Cannot WAIT!!

    November 3

  • Carol A.

Susy, our activities coordinator at KayaSol has sent info for us about activities at KayaSol.... Please check out the discussion board as the post here doesn't allow more than 1,000 characters. If you are interested in any of them, please email me or post here so we can start to put together some group activities..... I will be taking a few lessons early in the week, pay for a photo session, and definitely want to check out the nature preserve (the last thing listed here), a trip to another beach maybe, and some snorkeling.

    September 29

    • Carol A.

Ok. Yeah I think it will be a specialized type of lesson you might need to inquire about separately. The quote they gave us is for group general surfing I think.

Would like lessons Mon-Thurs. I guess Mon I will be on my own since you are traveling that day. Were is this discussion board with the other activities? This is Joy, just realized I may have posted under Kay's acct

I have RSVP'd yes but am still trying to make sure I can rent a SUP Surf board while down there. I will only be there for five days but would like to connect up with the group during my time there.

Air is booked. I have Studio #1 reserved from the 11th-15th. I am actually arriving on the 9th and have an email into them to see if they have any A\C units for those first two days.

  • Joy

I have sent an email to the hotel asking to switch to suite 6, so suite 1 with ac should be open soon.

    1 · August 6

    • Carol A.

Hey Joy! How's it coming along? Do you have your room and air all straightened out now?

      August 20

    • Joy

We have suite 6 which does not have air conditioning but does have a kitchen. Haven't booked the flight yet . The price went up and I'm holding off to see if it comes down again. Its not a huge difference so if the seats start to fill up I'll grab them.

      August 20

  • Carol A.

Update.. OK everyone.. Suite #3 is now booked. We currently have 5 people confirmed for this trip with deposits down on rooms. There are still several non air conditioned studios and suites available as of today.

    August 11

  • Joy

Do you think we will get a group discount on the surfing package or should we book them ourselves?

    August 9

    • Carol A.

Hi Joy!! Let's wait and see on the surfing packages. It depends on what everyone wants to do. Some may not want to surf every day, or may not want to take lessons. I personally plan to take a few lessons but maybe not every day. That's why I think getting together on the 5th will be good, to get together and discuss all these things. In the meantime, I plan to contact the owner and find out...

  • Carol A.

Yeay!!! Sheila is coming!! Shhhh.. Don't tell anyone, but it's her birthday that week.... This trip was actually planned to celebrate her birthday...

    August 8

  • Carol A.

Update... Units are starting to fill up in November for various days at the property we are going to base out of. If you thinking at all that you want to come on this trip, I would highly recommend grabbing one of their units in the next week or two. You only need a 15% deposit. I don't want anyone to miss out on being close to the action or having to pay more at another property or hotel because they waited too long to decide.

  • Steve F.

    Happy Thursday!!
I'm still planning/interested in the trip to Costa Rica. Can I get an update on where things are as far as housing, please...thank you
Anyone bringing board(s)? I'd like to at least bring a 10' surfSUP but brining stand up paddle boards often is a no-no. Telling them its a surf board usually works but I still need to bring a paddle or two.....Thanks and look forward to sharingg some waves/sunsets.... :-)

    August 7

    • Carol A.

Hi Steve, if you don't mind paying $100 each way to bring your boards, have at it.. And it depends on how you come. If you fly into San Jose and want to take the commuter flight, no way. If you plan to rent a car from there or Liberia, bring soft racks.

      August 7

    • Carol A.

Bob is coming as a single male traveler, but has booked a room on his own. If we have another single male traveler RSVP we can coordinate to put you together. The rooms are cheap, so if you can afford to wing it and budget for about $53 per night for your own room, I would choose one. Then, as things get closer, we can see about someone joining you in your room. I have scheduled the meet and greet so that we can all meet each other and get more comfortable, so we can share rooms, etc.

      August 7

  • Carol A.

Joy, yes I meant Studio #2 earlier... So great! We now have 3 units booked in total. Who did you decide to bring with you? You can use our kitchen if you like. I believe we will be right upstairs from you guys.

I like Pilates, have taken 1 hot yoga class and enjoyed it!

      August 6

    • Carol A.

Nosara is a yoga village. In sure they will have Pilates. Its great to do it before you surf to stretch and warm up your core..

      1 · August 6

  • Joy

Do you mean studio #2? I just took the last unit with ac now and it was studio #1. Has anyone been to Costa Rica? Do you think we need ac in November? I would like a unit with the patio so I could sit out there while my son naps but don't want to be uncomfortable either.

    1 · August 5

    • Carol A.

Joy, would you please RSVP with your number of people? Thanks so much!!

      August 5

    • Joy

It would only let me + 2. I'll have my husband set up a profile and add himself.

      August 6

  • Carol A.

Update... All A/C units have been booked. We still have one spot open for a single lady traveler in Suite #3. At this point, I suggest booking one of the numbered units (they will be cooler than the named ones). If you're interested in sharing a unit, you can book and then let me know you want to share and I'll help coordinate. If we get just a few more folks with deposits on units, I will inquire about the big air conditioned house they have to see if we can consolidate to one property.

    August 5

  • Carol A.

I asked the owner Sohan, and she says mid November in Nosara is not bad at all. It is just coming off rainy season so it stays fairly cool. I was in Dominical last year with Sheila and we had a/c and I can't say I didn't appreciate it, but I could have done without it. I think its just harder for us Floridians because we live in it all the time so not having it is an adjustment..

    1 · August 5

  • Carol A.

Latest Update.. Studio #1 has now been booked by someone in our party. There is only one more a/c unit left. If you want it, grab it now!!

    1 · August 4

  • Carol A.

Update... I have one spot left in Suite #3. Looking for one more girl to fill the spot. It's one of the few units with a/c. Only two smaller units with a/c left.

The owner tells me November is doable without a/c and the units with numbers on them are cooler than the ones with names..

Also, the beachhouse was just rented during the week we will be there. There is one other larger home available but we'd need at least 6-7 people to move to that unit.

I have been thinking about this trip since joining the group. I was contemplating coming as a family or with only my daughter or husband. Is anyone opposed to having children or a 9 yr old on the trip? Also, they would not need to take up bed space, I could bring a blow up mattress for them keeping more beds open for adults. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks:)

    1 · August 1

    • Carol A.

Hey Joy! I think that's a some you are thinking about bringing your kids! We only need one more person in suite 3, but the good news is you could grab one of the studios for your family very affordably. If we ended up getting enough people to rent their big house, I don't see why not. For now though, why don't you grab one of their studios.

      August 1

    • Carol A.

You only need a 15% deposit. And if we get enough people to take the big house, I'm sure they'd let us consolidate

      August 1

  • Carol A.

Latest Update... I have a put a deposit down on Suite #3 at www.kayasolsurfhotel.com The property is as close to the beach and town as you can get, and it has many different types of units so that we can expand or shrink as necessary. There is also a surf school on property so all our boards and lessons will be right there, and there's a restaurant with live music at night, a nice pool, etc. This appears to be the best option in Nosara given the variableness of trying to put this trip together. Everything else is the same... If you are interested, contact me asap.. There are only a few air conditioned units, and I grabbed one of them.

    July 31

  • Rachel

I really want to go on this trip, but I'm waiting on my work schedule - I might have to travel out of town during the same week. I should know something by next week.

    1 · July 30

    • Carol A.

OK Rachel, let us know as soon as you can! We have a couple of properties that are awesome, and I'd like to be able to secure one of them, but need at least 4 people in total to commit to keep costs down for everyone.

      July 30

  • Carol A.

Another update... We will need everyone to pay in the full week's share to hold the house due to things getting complicated if we don't. If we don't get a minimum of 5 people by Sept 1st, I will refund everyone's deposits, unless we want to keep the house and just each pay more. Make sense? If we're able to book this unit below, it would only be about $20 bucks per night - $120 per person for 6 nights!! Crazy!!

    July 28

    • Martina D.

I am confused do I pay you the 95 and then the rest by the 1st or the whole 200 by the first? I can do either just let me know. Sent you a message this weekend not sure if you got it, but trying to figure out when I can get my payment to you!!
      Excited!

      July 30

    • Carol A.

Hey Martina!! Let's discuss offline.. I'd like to attempt to collect everyone's full share by Sept 1st, since deposits are nonrefundable. If I only collect half the deposit, everyone's deposit would be lost if I only take that share and give it to the owner to hold. We either get everyone's share by Sept 1st, or we don't, and then I refund everyone's deposits and you and I can just stay at another property. I already have one picked out and I'll share it with you when we can talk on the phone.

      July 30

  • Carol A.

One more note on the commuter flights... I am taking my chances on getting through customs without any checked luggage quickly and making it to the connecting gate by 1:15pm. If I don't make it, I will have to rent a car or try to grab a shared shuttle and drive it. You may not want to take that risk and just rent a car. It was only $78 for the one way into Nosara. Worth it if we can catch it..

    July 28

  • Carol A.

Hey Everyone! I have booked my flight so your host is completely committed!!! Decided to fly into San Jose and and take a commuter flight to Nosara. Here are the specific itineraries. Total cost for the two roundtrip flights was about $550.00. Spirit Airlines has a great fare right now but they charge for carry on's... And Nature Air is the commuter carrier. Let's do this!!! Who's coming with me???!!! Spirit Airlines:

I won't be making this trip, but wanted to support Carol's plan. The pricing on accommodations sounds unbeatable. My wife and I have talked about group trips for this very reason. You can't beat splitting the cost of accommodations. You get so much more bang for your buck. Renting boards as opposed to bringing your own equipment is great idea for beginners. Check the cost of checking a board with whatever airlines you choose it can be $100 EACH WAY! If you're a beginner surfer it doesn't make any sense to pay that and figure how to "lug" your boards around. You should be able to rent a decent board for the while trip for way less than that. Pura Vida!

      1 · July 22

    • Carol A.

Thanks for your input on this Dean! I'm really excited to put this together. Playa Guionnes is such a great beginner/intermediate break with mellow waves most of the time. It can get big but overall its such a consistent break. The homes I'm looking at are all awesome... Getting ready to put a deposit down on one soon.

      July 23

  • Carol A.

Hey Folks.. OK.. There are some really nice homes around Playa Guionnes and pricing on 3 homes I am inquiring about are coming in around $200 per person for 6 nights. If you are seriously interested in this trip, please email me through the site. I will need to get a commitment and a deposit from those planning to go by September 1st. I am watching flights into Liberia and they came down to $638 a few days ago. If they drop below $700 again I would grab them. I am definitely going on this trip so you can count on me.
