Introduction to Kingston upon Thames

Do RSVP 'Yes', without obligation, to follow any updates...

Meeting up at Jiva, whose team will be on hand to talk about any teeth, dental and dietary concerns, we'll lunch at Riverside Vegetaria, before checking out local companies (approximate map).

Alan Martin, who co-owns Food For Thought and highly recommends Jiva Dental, is kindly putting together goody bags for guests to collect upon arrival at Jiva, including a 20% FFT store discount card.

great to meet yo all yesterday and glad to hear about cheeky pea being ok now, guess they have sorted themselves out.
Shame Food for Thought could not offer a worthwhile discount to us on a regular basis as they are very expensive for everything.
Lush were brilliant, i will recommend them to friends.
a good visit to the dentists as well.
Well done Richard for all your hard work.
    Thanks Dennis

It was good to meet you too Dennis; in the end we combined our orders in FFT to get the £5 savings. We even met Richard Horsfield again,,who joined us for the rest of the tour, like at the Surbiton Meetup. Panacea, who gave us 20% off, turned out to be a health store too, and The Healthy Cook Co. discounted vegan cupcakes, chocolate brownies and tarts. The Cheeky Pea impressed, they even prepare vegan items in a separate area; just working with them to get labelling of suitability on their menu.

What time do you expect to finish the day around Kingston? Any idea? Are any of you going to the Riverside in the evening instead of lunchtime? As usual I have decided to support an important animal rights protest on Saturday now, in central London, from 12 until 4, but if there is an evening meal planned I may be able to join in for that. Please could anyone let me know if they would like to do that, or even try out the (almost vegetarian) Cheeky Pea if they are open later.
I passed by the Cheeky Pea on Sunday afternoon (yesterday) when I was out at the shops but they were closed and most frustratingly there was no information on opening times up on the door or window of the cafe which I thought was rather strange and not very sensible for them to forget to put up. I am advising them that this is important.

Sorry Lesley, in the end we didn't finish in Kingston until gone 7pm, as we stayed on for tea at The Cheeky Pea (I highly recommend a visit). They're thinking about opening on Sundays, by the way, and you can see their current opening times on Farcebook (https://www.facebook.c...) Mon-Wed:10:00-18:00 Thu-Sat:10:00-19:00.

LOL Just read their reply to you on FB, where their Thursday timing is different, I'll point out that they need to update their FB info - Mon-Wed:10:00-18:00 Thu 10:00-20:00 Fri-Sat 10:00-19:00.

Glad you enjoyed your intro to Kingston, it was lovely to finally meet you; there's never enough time, but I think we made the most of it.

This sounds great, but my RSVP is just a Maybe at present. I might be quite tied up this weekend. I don't know if I can get there for 11.30, but I can probably meet you all at the Vegetaria at around 12.30 if you are definitely going to be there then. If I come, it will be by car, so I imagine it is going to take a while to get parked in Kingston on a Saturday. Can anyone suggest somewhere to park, e.g. is there a public car park there where I won't have to take out a mortgage to buy a ticket?!( Or is that too much to hope for?) I would come by train, so as not to worry about parking, but I have a feeling that will take a good few HOURS......I'll have to ponder this one.

    September 25, 2013

    • Maggie B.

Thanks Lesley, that's a very kind offer, I may well do that. How long does the 111 bus usually take to get to Kingston from your house? If they are quite frequent, then it's a great idea. (And DON'T start any rumours about me being "tied up"! :-D ) I have parked at the Rose Car Park before, Richard, and as I remember it was eye-wateringly expensive, so thanks for the suggestion, but I think I'll avoid it. I'd prefer not to drive into Kingston on a Saturday at all if possible.

Sorry, what did you decide Maggie, I missed this message earlier and been busy!

      September 28, 2013

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

As Ritchie expects Riverside Vegetaria to be busy downstairs, we'll definitely be having lunch upstairs, which seats 24 guests.

I can't come after all, sorry. House-sitting this weekend. Have fun though everyone!

Hey everyone, very much looking forward to tomorrow. I have an interview at 10am in Twickenham which i'm hoping will be finished and i'll be on my way in time to meet at 11:30.

just found an e mail saying the date and time has changed?

    September 25, 2013

    • Richard Ⓥ M.

Sorry Dennis, don't panic(!), the date is the same but I had 11:30 PM previously, instead of 11:30 AM, and hadn't noticed until now.

      September 25, 2013

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

Oops, just noticed that the start time was set as PM not AM!

    September 25, 2013

  • Amrit

I'm sorry but I really need a rest and so I'll have to take myself off from this brilliant sounding meet up :( Sounds like Kingston is a very vegan friendly place though so will have to come but at another time.

    September 23, 2013

    • Richard Ⓥ M.

Hope you have a good break, sorry you can't join us this time.

As Lush are busy on Saturday, it's doubtful we'll be able to make bath bombs, but we're invited to fill any spaces on their 2:30pm spa tour.

There'll be a consultation on spa, mini pamper and other treatments, and a mini foot treatment or scalp massage, in one of their treatment rooms. They'll also have drinks and nibbles.

If you're definitely interested in doing the spa tour, I can always pass on your name now, to try to get you booked in advance.

Danielle, Store Manager at Panacea Health & Beauty, tells me they do 10% discount for Vegetarian and Vegan Society members, but will give us 20% off vouchers. They also do daily sampling, and will have a vegan-specific item on the day as well :-)

    September 20, 2013

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

It's worth noting that Riverside Vegetaria can hold about 21 people upstairs, and we can always spill over to, or even use, downstairs, if they're not too busy. You don't even have to dine with us, if you'd rather just do your own thing. If you want to meet up (again) at any point in the day, my mobile number is[masked]

Date now set as Saturday 28th September; Jiva are opening up for us from 11:30 to 12:30, so we'll meet there, then have lunch, and visit the other places afterwards. I'll be contacting existing, and some new, venues to confirm timings, e.g. Lush are offering everyone the chance to make their own vegan friendly bath bomb :-)

Oh, and sorry to hear of your medical condition, I wish you a speedy(ish!) recovery.

Richard I just had a check out on Happy Cow in case of there being places on there I had not been aware of in the local area and sure enough I found this cake baker which is vegan-friendly in Kingston no less! http://www.healthycookcompany.co.uk/

So I was thinking even if Jiva or something else falls through. what with them not replying, it is one you could add to your long list of possible businesses to visit in the town. What do you think?

    August 18, 2013

    • Lesley D.

As well as the Cheeky Pea, falafel and hummus bar which is almost all veggie and is just off Union Street in that Eden Walk Shopping Centre (in case not everyone wants a big meal at the Riverside, or if you are thinking of doing a small light lunch followed by a big evening meal later). Sorry it now sounds like I am taking over your event! These are just some ideas to throw into the pot anyway!
I see the baker is in Old London Road very close to two places you're already planning on visiting anyway.

      August 18, 2013

    • Richard Ⓥ M.

Cheers Lesley, I hope to finalise things once I'm back in the UK. Stella did contact me at the start of August, but I'd put off adding the date as you have to include the time too, and I failed to sort things before heading off to Stuttgart.

This is a maybe for us, as really interested, but won't know until much nearer the time (once a date's been decided).
