Visit To Surbiton

As with the majority of my social events, please feel free to come and go as you like, and RSVP 'Yes' without obligation.

An afternoon in Surbiton, south west London, which is about 20 minutes by train from Waterloo, and on Oyster bus routes (e.g. 465), alighting at the Surbiton Sainsbury's stop (NA north or NR south).

To include lunch at Lebanese DeliCafé (seats 6, so first-come-first-served, cash only), followed by visits to Surbiton Natural Health Centre (who have a limited supply of Shambhu's vegan cheesecake, though we can pre-order), Pickled Pantry and Village Pizza.

Seeking a cure for what ails you? As well as the health centre's many treatments, Real Herbs is two doors down (update: sadly closed until August 7th), and Contemporary Chinese Therapy beside the DeliCafé.

We might also get to enjoy the small, but nicely designed, Claremont Gardens (e.g. with takeaway), interest/weather permitting.

I enjoyed my visit to Surbiton. The Lebanese food was really nice, the owner of the cafe was very friendly! Also, the vegan chocolate cake at Pickled Pantry was one of the best! I learned a lot more that Surbiton has a good health centre, which specialises in Homeopathy and messages. I'd like to book appointment myself! Thanks Richard for organising a great day!

LOL, maybe they specialise in "messages" too Richard! e.g. from beyond the grave?

Sorry, can't come after all. Another time though maybe, I would like to try this place.

Thanks for letting us know, do try to pay the DeliCafé a visit sometime...

What a great Meetup, superb Lebanese 'home-style' food at the DeliCafé, vegan choc cake made especially for us by Jo at Pickled Pantry, a free can of Biona coconut water and 10% discount at Surbiton Natural Health Centre, and vegan pizza from Village Pizza... plus veg companions of course, to share it with :-)

Although I'd not replied as a yes, I actually made it although rather late due to other commitments. It was a good meetup and worth going, had some good food from the places we visited. I had no idea Surbiton was quite vegan-friendly!

Really Lesley? Great, maybe I will try to move there then! That is in the area I would ideally like to be.

Thanks for joining us Lesley, it's great to know that we can add Surbiton to our list of veg-friendly venues :-)

I haven't had any requests for pre-ordered cheesecakes, though I received the following, as part of an email from my friend's at Shambhu's - "Hopefully Surbiton Natural Health Centre will have a few of our cheesecakes in stock, should any of your party wish to treat themselves"

We've some members from the London Vegetarian Meetup joining us too, as I've listed this on there. http://www.meetup.com/vegetarian-419/events/131114632/

Unfortunately, a notice on the door of Real Herbs says that they're closed until August 7th; I guess they're away on holiday.

Mo Dardouk, owner of the DeliCafé, replied to my email, re. my Meetup for members - "We will endeavor to make their visit to our family run Lebanese DeliCafe; a memorable one. We will aim to offer them the chance to indulge themselves and will be spoiled for choice with our fresh Mezza specialties of Lebanese vegan and vegetarian cuisine... We at the Lebanese DeliCafe’ will be looking forward to extend our hospitality to the group of local vegetarians, vegans and interested parties during their leisurely visit to Surbiton, on Saturday 27th July."

Village Pizza have various offers, when ordering for collection, so I'll check with them and bring a menu, so we can order takeaway using my mobile. It would be great to swap slices maybe, so we get to try one of each. I'm likely to take ours home on the bus, to heat up for tea, if we can keep our hands off :-)

  • Lesley D.

Maybe, it all depends when! Obviously will post up on the facebook group too when you have the date for this!

    July 14, 2013

    • Lesley D.

I know it is your birthday! That of course is in my diary, but we may see you Sunday at the pub if you can still make it, unless you have special plans this month for the whole weekend?
I am quite sure they do cheezly at ALL the Village Pizza outlets, we know the Twickenham Branch has their vegan pizzas listed on their menu as their leaflets come through our door all the time, they are so ahead of all the other pizza shops but quite a small chain, pretty sure it is standard part of their menu, they put Pizza Express to shame really.
We have had their pizzas a time or two, from Twickenham.
I certainly plan on checking out some of the other places in Surbiton another time though cannot make this Saturday, and yes I think it is finalised now as this date.

      July 23, 2013

    • Richard Ⓥ M.

Yes, definitely Saturday, so we can help you celebrate :-) I've added Village Pizza's vegan pizza options at the bottom of the description.

I had no idea there was a veggie cafe there! How long has it existed?

    July 14, 2013

It would not be out of my way at all, but pls let me know what they reply.

Best to carry this conversation over to the Kingston Meetup... I'll reply on there, when I hear anything.

Raj, at Pickled Pantry, kindly confirmed they have vegetarian options, including a cooked breakfast, though it sounds like they don't cater for vegans. Having 'phoned venues, I'm emailing them details of this event and to clarify veg suitability.

    July 16, 2013

I had this reply, a few days ago, from George Setchell, boss of the Pickled Pantry -

We do have plenty of vegetarian dishes on our menu, some of which could be adapted to be vegan as well, such as:

Homemade hummus trencher, feta, roasted peppers, red onions, pinenuts and balsamic glaze (a trencher is an open sandwich served on ciabatta) - no feta for vegans.

Fresh fruit salad, berry compote and yoghurt - no yoghurt for vegans.

We do have soya milk for coffees and iced coffees, freshly squeezed orange juice and apple juice.

We have a few gluten free cakes, but currently don't offer any vegan cakes. All our items are ideal to eat in or take away.

So sorry cant make this now, it's the day Lucy goes away to Woodcraft Folk Camp so will be packing and seeing her off on the minibus which is quite late in the day but it makes going out for a midday meet up a problem due to having to rush back.

    July 16, 2013

    • Richard Ⓥ M.

No problem if you just wanted to pop over earlier to check out the Lebanese, as they're open from 9:30am all the way through 'til 6:30pm :-) Otherwise, wait until we report back, to pay a visit...

      July 16, 2013

    • Richard Ⓥ M.

I hope Lucy enjoys the camp :-)

Okay, I've spoken with Moet at the DeliCafe, and they can only seat a maximum of 6 guests. Whilst I'm emailing him the details, and we can make a booking, I can see this might be another 'leisurely' sit and eat when you can affair.

    July 16, 2013

    • Lesley D.

When are you announcing this to the whole group as i notice it is not announced yet?

      July 16, 2013

    • Richard Ⓥ M.

Just tarting it up and adding extra details, should be announced soon.
