Colleen Kirk, Senior Engineer with Weidlinger, NYC

Bio Colleen Kirk has 6 years of experience providing civil and structural engineering design services for building and infrastructure projects in NYC and across the US with Weidlinger Associates Inc (WAI). Currently, she is the Project Engineer for the siting and design of 1,100 right-of-way bioswales and 20 green streets to capture stormwater runoff in the Bronx for client NYC Department of Design and Construction.

She has also taken the leadership of Weidlinger’s Sustainable Design Initiatives by coordinating discussion panels and office practices, and has been involved with green infrastructure and green roof designs.

On October 1st, Sustainable Jersey City will address the need for more Green Infrastructure in Jersey City.  Aging infrastructure across US major cities is reaching the end of their respective useful lives. As utilities, roadways, and bridges are being repaired or replaced, there is an opportunity to include sustainable and natural systems in the design. Cities large and small across the country are embracing sustainable solutions to manage stormwater runoff to control flooding and reduce pollution to our waterways. Some examples of this green infrastructure are rain gardens, bioswales, permeable pavement and green roofs. Right now NYC is planning to install thousands of bioswales (think big tree pits) instead of giant underground tanks to collect stormwater.  What can Jersey CIty learn from NYC ?

Save the date – more details to come.
