SJC Monthly Meeting - EAT, MEET, TALK ! Green Your Building Series~

SJC is digging in this Fall with a Greener Buildings education agenda, starting with our September 2nd Monthly Meeting.  We're partnering quite a bit to offer opportunities for both residents and trade professionals to understand the enormous environmental and health benefits (Quality Of Life) and frankly, the cost savings and returns on investments available to individuals, businesses and the City of Jersey City, if we all move in this direction.  We are also forming a Working Group to look at opportunities to modernize our building code and propose new policies where gaps exist.

If your schedule permits, come learn more about energy efficiency strategies for your own home or commercial building, and about ways you can plug into this Working Group - please RSVP so we make sure we have enough RAZZA to go around !  That's the EAT part.

September Monthly Meeting -

~ENERGY EFFICIENT DESIGN PROJECTS YOU CAN DOFOR YOUR HOME OR BUILDING ~

~ Special Guests - Elaine Hanson, Mark Smith and Tiina  ~

Elaine, Mark and Tiina are your neighbors and have gone through the painstaking process of creating amazing results with energy efficient designs and techniques at their respective homes, in Ward F / Bergen Lafayette and Ward E / Paulus Hook & Hamilton Park; all are very old buildings with some common challenges.

Tiina Ruhlandt Medel - President and Partner of EIMC LLC, an independent marine surveying and adjusting firm headquartered in Jersey City; Tiina is also Board Secretary of the Educational Arts Team and lives in WARD E / Hamilton Park.

Tiina Ruhlandt Medel converted her drafty 1880’s brick row house to an Energy Star Certified home in 2011. The Medel family completely gutted their 4 story row house in the Hamilton Park neighborhood - sealed, insulated, installed radiant floor heat and ductless split ac. Now the downstairs apartment can keep the heat at 64 degrees and be completely comfortable.

Mark Smith - Filmmaker, Founder: o7Films, Inc., live in Ward E / Paulus Hook

When Mark Smith moved with his family downtown 20 years ago and purchased his old brownstone, he began a years-long process and journey (1991 - 2013) with three things in mind - to reduce the energy consumption of his building, to make it more comfortable to live in year round, and reduce the cost of the energy portion of his monthly expenses, all at the same time.  Here's his project -

Elaine Hansen, Artist / Founder Yoga Shunya, lives in Ward F / Bergen Lafayette

When Elaine Hansen started to think about buying a derelict ironworks in 2000, she knew she could only afford to live in the brick shell with an energy efficient renovation. Chris Benedict, a NYC architect with a green reputation, checked out the building and estimated an energy efficient reno could be done with a yoga teacher's modest loan - on the condition that Elaine & friends did a lot of the work. Eight years later, a lot of caulk, insulation, and sweat, the lofts were finished -  3500 sf commercial ironworks renovated into live/work lofts.  Here's photo of her radiant ceiling heating system -
