Learn how to become an urban food producer and composter! This talk will define what organic waste is, why it is important and how to put it to good use, as well as an overview on the variety of methods to grow food in an urban landscape. From windowsills to rooftops, from total beginner to experienced gardeners and farmers, there is something for everyone in this discussion.

Vandra Thorburn is founder of an award winning business plan -Vokashi - kitchen waste solution. A unique composting service that helps households and small businesses recycle their food scraps, Vokashi uses the Japanese method of fermenting organic waste called Bokashi. Vokashi collects food scraps and then processes it at community or private gardens and public or private green spaces to amend soils or produce compost to enrich local soils.

Angelo Zaharatos is an Architect, Urban Greenscaper and founder of Garden Direct, a grass roots organization that addresses urban community and environmental challenges through sustainable design consulting, food growing systems and education. Garden Direct designs portable gardens for urban settings. He is also co-founder of GardenLabs NYC, a think tank addressing urban environmental challenges through eco-systemic design and education.
