Jersey City Heights spring cleanup campaign continues
Community groups in the Jersey City Heights are collaborating on the first-ever “Spring Into Action” neighborhood clean-up campaign.
The effort began last weekend and continues on Sundays through April 28, with the exception of April 8 (Easter Sunday), according to a news release.
Volunteers -- who are asked to bring their own brooms and shovels -- fan out to clean up streets, sidewalks and parks. They meet at set points before heading out to pick up trash and recyclables throughout target areas.
All clean-up events are rain or shine.
“Spring Into Action is a timely opportunity for the community to come together and take the idea of ‘spring cleaning’ to the neighborhood level,” Peter Basso, president of the Washington Park Association and one of the Spring Into Action coordinators, said. “Through the winter, residents repeatedly shared complaints with me and other community leaders about the chronic litter and vandalism that’s been plaguing our streets. This resident-driven campaign will raise expectations for a cleaner neighborhood.”
The co-sponsors of Spring Into Action include AARP Chapter 5102, the Central Avenue Special Improvement District, Farms in the Heights, the Heights Community Coalition, the Pershing Field Garden Friends, the Riverview Neighborhood Association and the Washington Park Association of Hudson County.
The Jersey City Incinerator Authority is providing bags and will pick up trash and recyclables from the volunteers at the conclusion of each clean-up event, organizers said.
The campaign culminates on April 28 with a neighborhood cleanup and event in Riverview-Fisk Park that will feature a local drop-off location for e-waste, hazardous waste, leaves/compost, recycling and a Dumpster for communal use (non-construction waste only).
Spring Into Action targets different areas within Jersey City Heights each week.
