Eco-Salon "Sustainability in the Eyes of a Health Care Provider"

with Cate Ranheim, MD, Meriter Hospital and Erik Ranheim, MD, PhD, UW Health

“Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.” – Howard Zinn, Author

Unfortunately for many Americans, healthcare looks like a revolving door of last-minute ER visits, with each spin, mounting costs for the patient, the hospital, and the community. How do we get our communities off of this high risk, high cost merry-go-round onto a more sustainable path towards long-term health and vitality? How do health care providers connect the dots between a healthy community and a sustainable community?

Join us for the grand finale of our 2013 Eco-Salon Series, “Sustainability in the Eyes of…” as we look through the lenses of Cate and Erik Ranheim, two prominent health care providers in the Madison Region who are working on the frontlines of community-based health care to keep Dane County’s homeless population from walking into the ER.

About Cate and Erik Ranheim

Dr. Cate Ranheim is a Meriter hospitalist and hematologist. Her husband, Dr. Erik Ranheim is a UW Health hematopathologist.

In 2009, Cate and Erik co-founded the HEALTH program (Helping Educate and Link the Homeless). The mission of HEALTH is to overcome barriers to good health for the medically underserved residents of Dane County.

Through the program, Cate and Erik voluntarily offer medical treatment to the county’s homeless population.

Married since 2006 and the parents of four children, Erik and Cate say they share a passion for service and see it as responsibility, not a choice. The couple has traveled to Cuba and Belize, supplying medical clinics there with basic equipment that makes a significant impact on the health and wellness of local patients.
