Sustainable Living Network - Madison Area Message Board › Growing Food and Sustainability Wants Your Help
Mount Horeb, WI
Hello Members of SLN,
One of our newest members, Gabrielle Hinahara and her sister have created a great sustainability program in Middleton that she'd like you all to know about!
Growing Food and Sustainability is a new program in the community of Middleton, WI that teaches sustainability education through gardening and food production. For our first season, we are engaging middle and high school youth in hands-on garden work, nutrition, cooking, art, people-powered transportation, and multi-age relationship building through teaching and mentorships. Our Summer Program primarily takes place at our greenhouse and three garden sites (a total of 7,000 square feet of growing space!), all located at public schools in central Middleton. We are also expanding our work into the greater Middleton community by running a kids activity table at the Downtown Middleton Farmers' Market, delivering by bike trailer half of the produce we grow to the Middleton Outreach Ministry's food pantry, and piloting a bike-powered compost service for a local bakery.
We have two full-time youth program leaders, Gabrielle and Natalie Hinahara, and a goal of involving 5 full-time participants between the ages of 18-30 and 5 high school interns in helping us to run Growing Food and Sustainability this summer. We are also looking for general volunteers and workshop leaders of all ages! Do you have a skill that you would like to share with local youth related to gardening, cooking, nutrition, art, the environment, biking, or sustainability? Consider helping to plan a workshop or even leading your own! Do you have experience in marketing, graphic design, carpentry, or event planning? Share your talents with us! Don't feel like you have a special skill but still want to be involved? We have many opportunities for everyone, from weeding to watering to supervising students on group bike rides.
