Build a permaculture "herb spiral" in a Reston back yard!

Diane recently completed a permaculture design course at GMU and is anxious to share her new knowledge with everyone.  We'll create a permaculture herb spiral in the backyard, so come prepared to get your hands (possibly feet and clothes) dirty. Wear sturdy shoes and bring your gardening gloves. Dress for the weather!

Here's a picture of an herb spiral which is designed to increase planting area and create microclimates to improve garden production.

Sounds good. Thanks Diane. Probably won't be until mid April. Have to map out space and will be traveling also.

Fran - if you want volunteers, we should post your event here. There was at least one person who couldn't come to the event today - she might want to come out to help with yours.

A big thanks to everyone who came out for the permaculture herb spiral... Your hostess just kept working on the spiral after you left and now it has filled the entire back yard! Just kidding. Stand by for photos.

Wish you could be here! You'll have to come see it when it's finished. I am planning to go to Di Baggio's when they open and buy the plants for the spiral....

A little update: I've got the foundation for the bed laid out - a few layers of straw and leaves over dirt that has been solarized for a few months to kill some of the weeds - which I probably didn't need to do.
We'll have to dig up some dirt from my back garden to mix with composted manure and leaf compost and move all that to the garden area. Then, we'll use stones and bricks to create the spiral and use some small river rock to edge the area. Should be fun - and a good work out!
