Wild Medicinal Plant Walk - Round Two!

June....more plants.....bigger plants! How quickly they  change in the growing season. When we did our May 3 walk, many were quite young, and some had not even yet appeared. What a difference six weeks will make! Medicinal uses, how to harvest, edible properties (if appropriate) will be touched on. This walk will be in Ryan Park again, but coming in from a different entrance. There is a $10 fee for this walk.

The entrance we will use is located on LAFAYETTE RD. in North Kingstown. You will take the Rt 102/Wickford exit off of RT 4, heading toward Wickford. Lafayette Rd. Is off of RT 102, less than a mile from this exit. There is plenty of parking at this entrance. When turning on to Lafayette Rd from RT 102, also known as TEN ROD RD, entrance to park is right ahead on left.

SUSAN CLEMENTS, will once again, be your guide for this walk. She has been happily immersed in exploring, harvesting, medicine making, consuming and sharing about the indigenous wild plants every spring, summer and fall since the 80s. Her passion is to help ignite the herbal fire inside anyone interested in exploring the green world. She was the original owner and visionary of The Herb Wyfe in Wickford for 16 years, has taught numerous apprenticeship programs since the early 90s, and she is currently regional educator for a major herb company. She maintains an office in Wickford where she practices holistic skin care, reflexology and wellness consultations.

This walk was great. Susan led us again which was great since she knows her stuff. I think the next step will be learning to make medicine and Susan will be happy to teach us, I'm sure. Books: I said I'd put a couple titles hereI found and like...THE FORAGER'S HARVEST by Samuel Thayer and EDIBLE WILD PLANTS by John Kallas, PhD. I also have Peterson's Field Guide titled EASTERN/CENTRAL MEDICINAL PLANTS AND HERBS by Steven Foster and James A. Duke. One more thing....I bought two quick reference guides which are really cool. They are laminated and fold up accordion style. One is "Medicinal Plants, one "Edible Plants" from Waterford Press.

Thanks Rod! I enjoyed this walk too. We had a chance to see so much more this time around. Thanks for sharing info on reference material. Please let me know how you do with wild lettuce. A quick way to dry that works for me ( if that is how you want to use it), is in the car. I put in a basket and cover with a clean dish cloth. Going out now to take another look at that yellow goats beard before it closes up!

Hi Diane! Welcome to Sustainable Skills! I see your name on the RSVP list. Looks like you are all set. If you need to change your RSVP you can easily do that. Susan...my son will have to work so I'll be alone. I put down for me plus 1. It'll just be me.
