Public Hearing on Colorado HB13-1192 GMO Labeling

As many of you know, HB[masked] was introduced in the Colorado House by Representative Jeanne Labuda on January 31, 2013.  Here is what’s happening.  Please get this out to everyone.  We need people at the state capitol next Thursday for the hearing.  We especially need experts – doctors, scientists, and those who can speak to the facts that support GMO labeling.

We need to support this, immediately and fervently!  Representative Labuda is ALREADY FACING PRESSURE FROM OPPOSING GROUPS!! and to this point has been going about this on her own, so we all need to stand behind her and let her and all our other delegated know we support this effort!

1 -- NEXT WEEK there is a hearing of HB[masked] on the schedule for the Health, Insurance & Environment Committee.  It is on Thursday 21 February at 1:30 PM in Room 107.  If you can make it at all in support and/or to testify in support of this bill, please go!! .  If you wish to testify in support of the bill at the committee hearing on Feb 21st or know someone who could, please call Rep Labuda’s office [masked] and let her know.  You could additionally email if you wish [masked] .  Also, if you are going to testify, please write yourself notes so you remember what you want to say.  Keep it simple, speak from the heart and from what you can support with facts.  The process is easy – You sign up to speak, they call you up, you make your statement, they ask you questions if they wish, and you thank them for their time and consideration.  You should arrive early at the capitol, at least by 1:15pm.  HB[masked] should be the 2nd bill heard by the committee that day.

No signs.  Dress and act respectfully so we are heard!  REMEMBER! – We are in favor of our right to know what is in our Food so we can choose!

2 – We need to have medical doctors and scientists there to support this bill since the opposing side will be bringing their own.  So, if you are or know a doctor or scientist who is **FOR** GMO labeling, please attend/ask them to attend!!! We also need any farmers that have been affected and want to speak, and anyone who has a personal story to tell about the effects of GMO’s on their or their family’s health.

3 -- We need to contact all of our legislators and ask them to support this bill --- phone calls work best as emails can be more easily *lost.*  You can find your district state-level Representatives and Senators here:  http://www.colorado.gov/#  ---  Please contact them today and every day until they pledge support.  One phone call, once a day.  If we all do it, they'll definitely hear us!!  Just copy down the phone numbers and call - at a stop light, in line at the store, while making dinner, while waiting for the laundry to dry -- whenever!  Just a couple of minutes a day to show we care about this issue!! Rep Labuda is the sponsor of this bill in the Colorado House.  At this time, there is no sponsor in the Colorado Senate.  Please contact your senator and ask them to sponsor the bill in the Senate.  Also contact your state rep and ask them to support HB[masked], as well as contacting the committee members.

Post it to Facebook, Twitter, email everyone you know!!!  Print out some cards with the numbers and pass them out to everyone you know who is in support of this (make sure not to give the numbers to the other folks -- if they're against this we definitely don't want to help make it easier for them!) and ask them to call.

Now is the time to ask your Pastor to speak at Church for just a minute, your PTA group to speak there for just a minute, to speak to your area Junior League, and everyone and anyone else you can think of!

What we have experienced is that the legislature does not know much about the issue, sees it as a federal issue, knows that there is a lot of opposition, and is not aware of the amount of support.  WE MUST DEMONSTRATE TO THEM THAT MANY SUPPORT GMO LABELING!

AND REMEMBER – THIS BILL IS ABOUT LABELING!  WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS IN OUR FOOD!

Now is the time!!  Now is OUR time!! We will need people to come out and support this at every hearing, so get ready!  It’s time to walk your talk and take action!

See you Thursday Feb 21st 1:15pm at the State Capitol

 Please get the word out!

There will also be a booth at Evolve Expo and the Denver Family Expo that will be held in the same building at the National Western complex.  We are preparing the booth material but we need volunteers for Saturday and Sunday.

Thanks for your work!  We are rolling now!

See you on the ground!!!

After reading this Colo Bill (First Read), it seems a bit shorter when contrasted with the Cali Prop 37 Bill, having more meat to it, more educational: http://www.carighttoknow.org/re.... Also, Colo Bill does not go far enough in defining exactly how enforcement of this bill would happen, and how it would be financially supported by the department, i.e. How many staff, qualifications are needed to support these. Is the State laboratory ready to perform the necessary tests, or is there another method, body?...

Also, be prepared, your Senator may not be so easily findable: found mine on Denver.org through district, then gen. assembly page to find name, number...

Also, I heard much of the following at the hearing, but feel somewhat late in awareness of all the facts presented here so nicely, grouped. Can anyone credible discredit the things said in this vid or their qualifications that might pose a problem with their testimony? I ask because I want to be as impartial as possible to get at the scientific truth; and to apply the correct method and amount of Risk Management with the amount of Risk Assessment currently obtained. http://youtu.be/hAMlir8oprw Thank you

Although we didn't win, I think the education provided was great... we now know what the opposition is bringing up and have a chance to mobilize with more force than we did before, so I'm taking away the positives. Also, it seems we were at least able to change the minds of two of the representatives and that is a powerful message as to how effective the movement is becoming!

The hearing brought more education and awareness to the representatives, and to the supporters and opponents as well. The motion to move to Appropriations failed 2-7. Most of the reps that did not support it said they thought there were not enough studies to show that GMOs are a health risk and that the impact on the food growing/delivery chain would be complicated and great, especially where it deals with interstate commerce. They felt this was a federal issue and asked the supporters to support US Rep Jared Polis with his federal bill. It was announced that the supporters were planning on a statewide Initiative. The good that came out of the hearing was the education, the understanding of who the opposition are and why they oppose, and the connections that were made between the supporters. Supporters want to meet to discuss and begin the Initiative Process.

It was amazing. Very long. The meeting started at 2:15 pm and went to 7:45 pm. We had about 60 people in favor and the opposition, all hired guns had about 20 there. They took a very long time testifying. Very well Prepared. In the end the committee voted it down and would not allow the House of Representatives to hear the issue.

Remember - Everything we do brings more awareness and education to the issue! And eventually, what the majority of the people want becomes the rule. :)

At 10 minutes into his talk, Bernie Sanders speaks to antibiotic resistance, this is a major issue worldwide. The plants, bugs, and bacteria always mutate around the synthetic chemicals. This has happened with GMO crops in the U.S. See more information at http://www.denverdeb.com/2012/0...

Yes, Vermont's Bernie Sanders said it all in the first three minutes of his address. It's that simple, really! Things seem to be progressing in "Vermont Right To Know" 2013 efforts. Tripartisan support. More at http://www.denverdeb.com/2013/0...

I apologize for my incorrect statements before. It sounds as though I need another civics lesson from reading my last post.

Found my state representatives in the house and senate: http://www.colorado.gov/esri/we... Called my Senator from this List: http://www.leg.state.co.us/Clic...

Process flow chart of Bill to Law: http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Sate... FYI: My senator's staff told me it is too late in session to add another bill to her work load, and that after discussing it, she would not back it. So, it looks as though after Thursday's showing of support, attention and action for the fed bill, or working this bill up into another session will be necessary after this Thursday's tabling of the matter.

Best of luck to us, and thank you Tryna ;)

    GMOs Genetically Modified Organisms explained

This speech is absolutely the most brilliant, honest, concise, common sense summation, anyone has ever made on GMOs and the consumer's right to know, what ingredients are in our foods. As presented in front of US Congress on June 14, 2012 by Vermont US Senator Bernie Sander. Everyone must SHARE this video on Face Book and FORWARD the following link thru E-mail to everyone in your Address Book, I did

HAVE YOU HEARD? US Rep Jared Polis is announcing tomorrow at 12:30pm at Alfalfa's in Boulder ther he is co-sponsoring a new Federal bill about GMO labeling that will be introduced in the US House. Here is the link: http://www.dailycamera.com/news...

I agree, the bill needs more meat (pardon the pun). The national coalition of states is working on stronger, common language for all states and HB[masked] will mostly be amended. Rep Labuda is committed to creating strong legislation and has been given other language from other states to consider. Our job is to show support, keep her updated, and give her ideas or solutions to consider. Dan, you bring up valid points. You (or anyone) could email your comments to [masked]
