These chemicals are a class of chemicals used to soften plastics and deliver fragrances in products. That "new car smell" is the result of phthalates used in the plastic components of the interior finishes. After sitting in the heat, the phthalates vaporize and when the air cools, it settles on the glass surfaces and creates that hazy film that is constantly building up.
