Pine Ridge reservation is perhaps one of the most extreme food deserts in the US, with some people having to drive[masked] miles to get organic food in one of the harshest climates in the country. Hot, dry extreme winds turn to 50 below wind chill in winter. Hail, late and early freezes and other extremes make it really challenging to grow food locally. 60% of adults have diabetes, heart disease is epidemic, life span of a Lakota male is 49 years. But yet there are strong rays of hope rising on the reservation.

I'll share some of the gardening techniques we're using there and also some of the social techniques used by a number of organizations including ours to reverse these extreme conditions. Can these lessons be translated to St Petersburg? Yes!

The talk will be held at First Unity Church at[masked]th Ave N, St Petersburg, starting at approximately 7:30 at Gaia's Guardians. The group will start the meeting at 6:30 with a discussion of Gaia's Garden, a book on how to grow an abundant variety of food in your yard easily and sustainable. Hope to see you there!
