Monthly Meeting

Sweetwater Camera Club meets the second Thursday of every month.
People start arriving around 6:30 to help set up and to socialize.

A guest speaker presents a topic related to photography and then after a short break member's images are critiqued by the speaker and then the speaker selects the best images in the themed categories.

This was an excellent meeting, although it centered around software that most people don't own, so it came across as a sales pitch as much as a tutorial.

This was the meeting I have enjoyed the most in months. John stated, " In this program I will present and demonstrate the Fine Art Techniques I use in Silver Efex Pro 2 by Nik Software to create expressive black and white images. I will present the software package and its features." The program was as advertised. I do own the software and enjoy presentations such as this one. It sparks creativity in me and helped me to understand how to more fully use my software. I hope we do more programs like this one. Anyone can do a free trial to see if this software is for them or to gain ideas for creative processing in software that they do own.

The key thing, and John got this point across, is you cannot use the jpg Monochrome out of your camera or just go to Adjustments in Elements and click on "convert to black and white". These simplistic adjustments produce a flat image with little emphasis on shadows and highlights.

You can get most of the same effects by just using the built in Hue/saturation, curves, Unsharp mask, contrast and exposure controls in Elements/Photoshop.
However, this is a hit and miss affair with a long learning curve.
I own both Topaz B&W & Nik Silver Efex
Topaz is a good choice for much less money at $59.
    Nik Silver Efex is $200.
You can get 15% discounts for each by looking on many pro photographers sites or Google "Discount code" and the product name.

As a note-He said he did not use color adjustments that much but I do - especially for the sky. Pushing the blues and cyan before desaturation will give you very dark skies.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
