Socrates Cafe: Raise a glass for Ric

It is with great sadness that I invite you to a special memorial Socrates Cafe event in honour of Ric Blakeney, who died this past Sunday 19th August.

Ric has been a regular at Socrates Cafe since 2007 and was one of our most original thinkers and interesting contributors. His son, John, says that Ric really looked forward to Socrates Cafe for the mental challenge it provided and the mix of people he met there. I know he will be much missed by those of us who knew him.

As a long-time member of Exit International, Ric chose to take his own life when he felt that his health would not improve enough for him to be able to enjoy life. It is not known yet if there will be an inquest.

Ric's family does not plan a memorial, but have suggested that we raise a glass for him while we listen to the jazz band he enjoyed at the pub he went to every Sunday. The Robber's Dogs play between 2-5pm, and you're invited to join us for a drink from 3pm onwards.

Whether or not you can make it for a drink with us, I invite those of you who knew Ric to share any thoughts or messages about him on our message board.

Join or login to comment.

Although a prior commitment meant I couldn't join you all, I wish I'd been able to.

Although I met Ric often, I don't feel I knew him really well, but he always seemed like somebody who liked his life. It's good to know people like that. I'll remember him.

Ric was one the most interesting people I've ever met. I liked him very much. We had a very nice chat back in May at the Pascal's wager night and I was so looking forward to meeting him again. I will try my best to join you guys this Sunday.

I am so sorry to hear this. I can't make it on Sunday due to a prior commitment, but Ric and his family will be in my thoughts.

I am sorry to learn of Ric's passing, it is a tragedy for his family and his friends. Like Ric I joined the Socrates Cafe to discuss philosophy and reflect on human suffering. I offer my condolences to Ric's family and friends.
