Price: AUD5.00 per person

Where: Berkelouw Books Newtown

Music is universal; it features in ever known culture around the world and throughout history. But what is music? Where does our unique penchant for music come from? Why do we find music so compelling?

At the next Socrates Caf? Newtown meeting, Associate Professor Goetz Richter, classical musician and philosopher, will address these issues in a talk entitled: Music as dialogue of the spirit. He'll particularly focus on how some key 19th century philosophers, such as Hegel, Hanslick, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche thought of music.

Then it's up to us to bounce around our own perspectives on music in the following discussion!

Goetz Richter Associate Professor for Violin and Chair of the String Unit [masked]). His performance career encompasses concerto, recital, chamber music and orchestral performances and he has a particular interest in assisting young performers in developing comprehensive skills and attitudes to sustain a long-term professional engagement with music. His research interests include all areas of violin pedagogy, repertoire development and the history of violin playing. He has also published in philosophy and the philosophy of music.

The philosophy of music will be the topic at the next Socrates Caf? Newtown, held on 17 November from 6.30pm at Berkelouw Books at 6-8 O?Connell Street Newtown, Sydney.

The meeting will kick off with a talk by Goetz. Following a few minutes for questions, we'll kick into the open discussion. At this point, we'll break off into groups, and discuss the topic at our leisure. During this time, Goetz will join each discussion group for a brief period, giving everyone a chance to bounce ideas around with him. After about 45 minutes, we'll reconvene and share the issues discussed in each group.

Note: this Socrates Caf? will have a $5 door charge, which includes a tea or coffee from the caf?.

Hope to see you there!
