Many sports are like this already: you get a better view on TV than by being present. When virtual reality becomes indistinguishable from reality, and the VR world is a far more interesting and rewarding place to live, will we stop caring about the real one? Would that be a bad thing?
It's been a long time, but I used often to make an effort to be down at the sea and watch the sun rise. There is an energy, a cathartic sense of renewal that is felt through all the senses by being present - the quality of light is one we all associate with it, but what about sandstone on arse, salt spray in nostril and on tongue, birdsong in ear.
Anyway, I love this cartoon as it speaks to so many areas of life, including philosophy.
