Sydney Virtual Reality Meetup #2

Come along for our second SVR meetup, hear the latest on VR, try out the Rift and meet other VR enthusiasts.

Initially, we can share some of the latest news and knowledge around the VR space, from the implications of Facebook's acquisition of Oculus VR, to interesting news, gadgets and uses of VR that members have heard about lately.

First topic will be on how to build a simple 3D VR game using the Unity game engine and integrating with the Oculus Rift + Razer Hydra. It will include things such as:
- integrating the rift to a 3D avatar with a skeleton.
- integrating the Razer Hydra to an avatar's hands for hand tracking.
- importing models into Unity to build an environment.
- basic animations and sound.

I'll try to make the demonstration non-developer friendly and will share any code afterwards too to help others apply to their own games or simulations.

We'll also touch on the possibly ways of designing the virtual user experience in such games/simulations, an interesting emerging area that will grow in importance as VR evolves.

There's plenty of time for other showcases and speeches as well. If you'd like to speak or showcase, or know anyone who's working on interesting stuff in VR, please contact me to slot you into the agenda. It would be awesome to hear what others have to share.

If anyone has an Oculus Rift, Razer Hydra, Virtuix Omni or any other VR gear that they can bring along for others to try out, that would be great. Any ideas on topics to discuss too let us know.

There will also be unlimited beer + cider (woo!) thanks to our sponsor Anchor, and enough pizza for everyone courtesy of Zookal.

Proposed Agenda:
6:00 to 6:30 - Networking and drinks.
6:30 to 6:40 - Latest news in VR.
6:40 to 7:10 - How to build a basic game in VR.
7:10 - 7:40 - Pizza + try out the Rift for yourself.
7:40 - 8:00+ - Showcases/Speeches from other members.
End - Networking, drinks and more Rift try-outs.

Please feel free to bring along anyone who'd like to see VR in action and RSVP them as guests so we've got enough space and food for all.

Thanks again to Chris for putting that on, massive effort.

If anyone who tried out Interceptor VR has a moment I'd love to hear any detailed feedback you might have. What worked for you, what didn't? How did you feel about sitting on the ground etc?

I can bring a razer hydra if anyone needs one for their demo?

    June 11, 2014

    • Chris Z.

Hey Peter, definitely bring one along if it's not too much bother. There will be a few people bringing Rifts and laptops but only one Razer that I know of so far. Many great demo's use both devices.

Just letting you know I might be a bit late. Looking forward to learning how to build a 3D VR game using the Unity game engine and integrating with the Oculus Rift. Have just ordered the development kit to allow my senior students to investigate programming games for it. Now I just need to figure out how!!

Hi, thanks to accept me. I am really excited to know the Oculus Rift, I am planning to buy the new development kit, I just need to see one time.

I don't know if you guys need, but I have a really good Laptop, it plays any actual game with extreme graphics. I can bring to the meeting if you want. It is more easy to carry than a desktop.

    Regards.

Caio, my laptop I'll be bringing is quite underpowered only runs VR at 48 rates/sec. If you can bring yours it might make a better experience.

We can try my rift on your laptop then. Thanks.

I'd be interested to hear someone speak about moving from Unity to UE4 engine if anyone has, and the strengths and weaknesses of both.
