Linux Install Fest

If you ever wanted to install Linux but you weren't sure how, just want a little help, or you got stuck while trying then what you need is a Linux install fest. There will be an Linux Install Fest at the Syracuse Innovators Guild 108 Walter Drive, Syracuse, NY 13206 (the location listed on Google Maps is our wrong/old so please don't go there by mistake) .

New location next to the Double Barrel Brewing Company on Google Maps or OpenStreetMap or Mapquest Open

We're focusing on distribution targeting older hardware like Lubuntu, LXLE, and Debian LXDE but we help will also be available for newer hardware and more demanding distribution such as Ubuntu or Debian with the Gnome desktop. If you are interested in helping people with a different distribution please post a comment saying you want to help and specify the distribution(s).

If you can bring a computer to install Linux on make sure that any important data on it has been back it up before you come. Even though we are focusing on older computers your system will still need at least 256MB of RAM, a 1 GHz CPU, and 4GB of storage space. If you have any question please ask

If you can't bring a computer but you want to play around with Linux and learn how to install it we will have a few extra computers available for you to use.

We will be selling live USB drives with Lubuntu 14.04, LXLE[masked] bit, LXLE[masked] bit, or Debian 7.0 LXLE. We might be able to make other distributions available if they are requested a few days in advance.

• $10 for 8GB USB 2.0 ($9 for dues paying members of the Syracuse Innovators Guild)

• $20 for 32GB USB 3.0 ($18 for SIG members)

• $1 Linux CDs or DVDs (free for SIG members)

All proceed will help the Syracuse Innovators Guild pay their bills

Lastly for anyone who is not a dues paying member of the Syracuse Innovators Guild donations are highly encourages for anyone attending this or any other even at SIG so that SIG can continue to exist

Thank you and I hope to see you there

OK. I am going to come in at 1:30PM to a little after 2PM to introduce myself. I will frame my question and see if anyone understands what I am asking. If their is an interest then we can set up another meeting to discuss this or I can learn how to do this in private.

Look forward to meeting new people and seeing the new location of the club!

Hey folks. I don't know much about what you are planning on doing this Saturday but I have a question about getting data from the Internet.

Suppose you want to build a database of certain companies you want to track. How can you write a script or web based query such that you are able to import the data that you want to import daily without having to go to the site and having to click and paste the data every single day into the excel spreadsheet??

I just want to know if I show up will anyone be able to help me with this? I could be doing this while you are doing what you are doing.

You could write a script that uses curl to pull down data, then parse it and put it in your database. Might get complicated depending on what you are looking at scraping from the page. You may also want to see if the company offers an API to extract the data. Some companies do not allow you to do this legally also, so be sure to read the terms of service and ensure you are playing by the rules. You could find your I address getting black listed if you are doing something the company doesn't like.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
