Avids is a small, but active group of hikers. We hike regional and state parks near the Twin Cities. We cater to people who hike regularly, are fitness-oriented, and want a fast pace and/or longer distance.
Recognizable photo required
We ask you to POST A RECOGNIZABLE PICTURE when you join. Your recognizable picture makes it possible for the event organizer and other Avids to recognize you at the trail-head.
Avid Plus hikes are intended for experienced Avids
Avid Plus hikes are our most challenging hikes. We don't allow first time Avids on these hikes, because they're too hard. Avid Plus hikes are intended for the more experienced Avids who have built up stamina by hiking with us regularly. We have lots of regular "non-Plus" hikes, and they are are plenty challenging.
Spring through autumn hiking
We post 2-3 hikes per week. We also trail run or walk-run on weeknights.
We post 1-2 hikes per week. Because the trails are ice-packed and slippery we usually wear ice-grippers for traction and stability.
Snowshoeing-- We snowshoe if/when there is enough fresh snow. If we snowshoe it is usually at least partly off-trail.
Frequently asked questions (Click the "Pages" tab for more details)
Regular Avid Hikes typically cover 6-9 miles at a sustained pace for 2.5 -3 hours. The pace is 3-4 miles per hour. This may not seem fast, but a typical typical hiker has a pace of about 2 miles per hour.
Avid Lite hikes are easier, "social-paced" hikes especially geared to newer Avids. New Avids should sign up for Avid Lite or regular Avids hikes.
Avids Plus hikes are 10+ miles, fast-paced, and intended for our more highly-conditioned regular Avids. Your first hike cannot be an Avids Plus hike.
How fit do I need to be?
Fairly fit. Some of us like to run and others don't, but if you can't break into a trot for a short distance you probably won't be able to keep up with the Avids (at least for Avids regular hikes). If you can, you'll do fine.
Do the Avids cancel hikes for rain, snow, or cold weather?
No. We hike in all conditions. Obviously in the winter it is cold and often wet. Don't sign up for an Avids hike if less than ideal weather would likely to cause you to cancel. If you are a weather wimp, other groups elsewhere will suit you better.
Sorry, but no. Most dogs don't have enough stamina for our hikes, and we have found that some dog owners don't follow park rules.
Can I bring my spouse, significant other, or friend?
No, not unless they have separately joined the Avids. Usually plus-ones don't know what they're getting into with the Avids. However regular Avids can bring their teenage kids (please discuss with the organizer first).
