This is a small but active group focused on fitness-oriented hiking. We cater to people who hike regularly and want a fast pace and/or longer distance. Spring through autumn we also have beginner and medium-distance trail runs.
Frequently asked questions (Click the "Pages" tab for more details)
How far, long, and fast do the Avids hike? Typically our hikes are 6-8 miles in length, with some as long as 11-12 miles. The hikes last 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours, and we keep a sustained pace of 3-4 mph. Sometimes some of us have to run a bit to keep up with the faster hikers.
How fit do I need to be? Fairly fit. Some of us like to run and others don't, but if you can't break into a trot for a short distance you may not be able to keep up. If you can, you'll do fine.
Does the Avids cancel hikes for rain, snow, or cold weather? Usually not. We pretty much hike in all conditions. We plan these hikes knowing that the weather may not be ideal. Spring weather conditions can be highly variable; you should expect cold, rain, and wind; and trails may be icy, puddled, wet, and slippery. You will need sturdy boots, and in the winter you will need warm clothes and (likely) ice grippers for your feet. Don't join if you're likely to back out if the weather turns cold.
Can I bring my dog? Sorry, but no.
