BRUNCH at ELIZABETH TAYLOR's favorite MEXICAN dive restaurant LA CABANITA!

According to Liz Taylor's adult son, his mom sometimes preferred to go to small, cozy, out of the way places where she could relax and enjoy a meal and not always have to be the center of dining room attention.  And supposedly one of her local L.A. drivers mentioned LA CABANITA in passing to her in the late 1980's while she was recollecting some of her experiences during the filming NIGHT OF THE IGUANA in Mexico and discovered how much she liked the authentic Mexican food there in Puerto Vallarta. Liz apparently then decided, based upon his recommendation, to go to LA CABANITA and instantly fell in love with the joint, its authentic style of Mexican food then frequented it over the remaining next 15 or so years of her life.

An interesting backstory about Liz and her appreciation of Mexican culture...after they fell in love on the set of Cleopatra, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton came to Puerto Vallarta in 1963 so that Burton could begin work on director John Huston’s film NIGHT OF THE IGUANA, shot almost entirely in the ocean side jungle of Mismaloya. However, that filming location was desolate and hotels for cast & crew were in short supply and primitive to say the least.

The old Oceano Hotel that stood in front of the black and white striped lighthouse on the Malecon in Old Town was the production’s headquarters. But when Elizabeth arrived to find a dirt floor and flying cockroaches in their “suite”, Burton called his buddy Huston and said “My friend, if we don’t find suitable accommodations for Elizabeth, I’m afraid I won’t be able to star in your film”. Huston immediately offered the couple his own rented villa on the hill in Gringo Gulch named Casa Kimberley, and the rest is history.

LA CABANITA is really more quaint and homey--not divey by middle class standards--but to "La Liz's" Beverly Hills-type entourage it probably would be considered a dive--and definitely off the beaten path, but that is also what added it to its allure. But the place also boasts some kick-ass fresh orange margaritas that are to die for, freshly homemade tortilla chips (usually still warm when served) and a unique house bean dip that is great with salsa and chips. Longtime patrons swear by its chiles en nogada, mole enchiladas, chicken mole and caldo de pollo. Food items are a tad pricey in comparison to other "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurants and mostly in the $10-15 range plus the price of beverages and tip (so be prepared to drop at least around $20 or $25 with a margarita).

We will salute the elegant and beautiful, but definitely down-to-earth Liz by enjoying a special non-movie, brunch/lunch outing at the small, but wonderful restaurant. The RSVP list is small, because the restaurant is also small. So first come, first served. Because of our small RSVP list please DO NOT RESPOND UNLESS YOU ARE 100% COMMITTED TO ATTENDING and Jono will manually adjust this list to give utmost priority to our group's more longtime members with a track record of more regularly attending our events and who have best honored their RSVPs (no offense to our newer members).

PARKING: Free nearby street parking is available and after our lunch we will walk off some of our food by strolling to the nearby Montrose Village shopping district (only a block or two away on Honolulu Avenue).

Virginia, the Meetup system says your e-mail message receiving capability is unavailable so hope you get this message, but DALE ANNE & I are going to try to arrive by 12:30pm to allow time afterwards to visit a nearby farmers market along Honolulu Avenue (the main drag through Montrose Village). So can you please try to arrive a little earlier--thanks!

Do we have any idea what her favorite drink was?

I do not know what LIZ TAYLOR's favorite drink at LA CABANITA was (though we can ask the manager on Sunday), but in general, at least in her later years, she was a once-a-week regular the The Abbey bar is West Hollywood—reportedly sipping tequila shots, downing watermelon and apple martinis or simply waving merrily from her wheelchair. Perhaps she liked their famous Fresh Orange Margaritas (which cost more than regular margaritas--but you can taste the difference in a good way).

I think that in honor of Liz , we should hit The Abbey bar as well after La Cabanita n retrace her drinking history :)

I, very regrettably, cannot make it tomorrow. I found out I have to work all day tomorrow. I've been to La Cabanita twice before and it would make any movie star drive from West LA and seek out Montrose. It has very, very good food and a fun atmosphere. I will miss you guys and say a few choice curse words for my employer :-).

Damn that Bugs Bunny, can't he leave a movie buff tour guide employee in peace on a Sunday--I thought the tour was closed on Sundays? Tell him if he doesn't behave I am going to tell Sylvester!
