Ideas Worth Spreading - This week's topic: "Metaphysics"

The general topic for this week was voted and we selected "Metaphysics."  I've spent over an hour searching Ted.com for talks that relate to this general topic and am hesitant about selecting one specific talk.  I can't find one that is directly related, and some talks may be offensive to group members given the challenging questions metaphysics automatically brings to the table.

I'm going to list a few links that came up when I used the key words: metaphysics, telekinesis, reincarnation, supernatural.  I'm also asking for other group members to help search for an appropriate TED talk to view as a group.  If you have the time and find something suitable, please post to this comment string.  (If you can't, email me and I will for you.)

Also, we are scheduled to meet Labor Day weekend.  I may not be available to lead the group, but if we have enough RSVPs, I can ask Elaine to run the meeting.

Here are a few very varied talks to consider:

http://www.ted.com/talks/alain_de_botton_atheism_2_0.html

I'm back to school so I don't have as much time to spend searching.  As a high school English teacher I already have tons of papers sitting on my end table waiting for my attention.

Oh boy... I just watched James Randi's talk. This should be an interesting meeting!

Of the talks that have been suggested my vote is for James Randi: http://www.ted.com/talks/james_randi.html

Could you please contact me at [masked] or cell phone[masked], I am very interested in the group but require some contact information. Also wonder how many will be attending the next meeting and if it is confirmed for August 31, at Raley's in Roseville.

    Thank you

looks like the discussion is on...so much to know and explore, so little time...saw this interesting quote this morning:

“The task is...not so much to see what no one has yet seen; but to think what nobody has yet thought, about that which everybody sees.”

    - Erwin Schrödinger

hmmm...wonder which perception gets agreed upon and thought about...
which is most important...the dream/dreamer, the current data/facts or the experience?

Unfortunately I can't come on Labor Day weekend, but here's another TED talk to consider, it's about debunking psychic phenomenon, so a slightly different tact, but sure to spark lively discussion
James Randi: Homeopathy, quackery and fraud

Thanks Juliana. I've listened to a few talks in preparation for the meeting, including Randi's. I thought that one the most on topic. But I've hesitated to suggest it because I thought Randi's confrontational manner may put people with opposing opinions on the defensive. I also thought it may serve to end the conversation more than it promotes it.

Good point, I didn't think of that. It is possible to be too challenging as to end discussion. Randi is pretty one sided and single minded. Thanks.

I was surprised that this topic has been floating around for some time to be discussed, because I knew that it had many facets, most of which would be highly controversial. This last link is definitely the more main stream scientific bent. It makes those purely materialist and atheist very comfortable. Being more agnostic and believing that this instrument, (my body/brain) can't perceive nearly as much as I would like to think of what goes on in the universe and is in fact still evolving itself into a higher level of consciousness with greater perception and knowledge than it can begin to comprehend at this limited time and space...so I stay open and as sanely skeptical as possible. The gray area is always full of both danger and potential. Pure faith doesn't question and doesn't ask for proof, just unfailing belief. Pure modern science relies on materialism and hard data, although quantum physics (especially theoretical) is dragging science into bizarre and spooky territory.
