Hanging Gardens via White Box in WCC, Another Arizona Paradise

Hello fellow hikers,

This incredible journey is starting to burst with popularity, but it has been a favorite to locals now for over 70 years.  The raving reviews  from everywhere you read, places this is on the Bucket List.  This journey should be one of the more awesome hikes we do this Summer.  Get ready for a Garden of Paradise hike!  This place is beautiful, both the White Box and the Hanging Gardens, and the Rope Swing.  However, please read the warnings before RSVP'ing.

1.  WARNING:  This hike will require you to show up early at 5:30am as to begin the day early.  Why?  Because it is imperative that we start our hike by 8:30am.  Because of the chance of afternoon Monsoons, late starts is just not a wise thing for this hike.

2.  WARNING:  You will be in Water for a long period of time.  If you are afraid of Water, you should not come.  There is no way to avoid the water on this hike.  You will need to bring a Dry Bag to protect your goods, and good water shoes.  A lot of people will be bringing a floatie so they can float down the creek.  There are approximately 12-15, 20 -100 yd swims

3.  WARNING:  You will have to bring a 4WD vehicle or drive with someone who has one.  You will be on a long dirt road to reach the Trail Head.  Probably about an hour each way.  You have been warned.  So if you get car sick or what have you, you probably don't want to come.

4.  WARNING:  If you have a 4WD vehicle, you will driving with the vehicle in 4WD for the majority of that dirt road.  If you don't have much experience in driving dirt roads, you probably don't want to make this one your first.  Every article you read about this place warns you of how horrible this road condition is.

5.  WARNING:  Please do not attempt to forgo the Meet Up Location and meet at the Trail Head.  Why?  Because those dirt roads are Jacked Up, and it is easy to get lost, so to avoid any gambling, please meet up at the Meet up location.  The Group will leave at 5:45am.

6.  Please have your vehicle fueled up BEFORE you get to the Meet Up location.  Please relieve yourself before we leave the casino as we attempt to make Zero stops.

7.  It is less than a total of 4 miles round trip, however, it is a slow go because we are canyoneering (Non-Technical), swimming,  wading, boulder hopping.  The reward is certainly worth the travels.  FYI:  I will not be doing this hike next year.

8.  If we the group gets to large, we will separate in groups of 15.  I would not worry to much about that, because there will always be your last minute drops.

9.  If you have a good 4WD and are an experienced driver on the rough dirt roads, It would be appreciated if you were to offer transportation.

10.  Lunch on the way back in Payson is optional, depending upon how quick or slow the group goes.

11.  Keep in mind it will be necessary to make a great pace to the hanging gardens as to beat any Thunderstorm coming in.  It is not uncommon for a T-Storm to hit at 12 Noon.  Plus, if it starts to rain, it will be imperative to get out off those Dirt Roads ASAP.

Hi All, I really am sorry to have missed this hike. It looks like you had a great time. Eric, you are awesome!
I would be interested in this hike if anyone is considering going back. I do not have a 4 wheel, high profile vehicle.

Eric thank you for all your time and effort in hosting the Hanging Gardens hike! Everyone was thrilled with the hike and indeed it was an adventure in both getting to the trailhead and the adventure to get to the falls. A HUGE thank you to all the drivers who made the hike possible. The turnout was amazing, zero no shows and even four more than the 52 signed up. That maybe the last time that ever happens. There were some first timers to the group and they were SUPER impressed with your planning, time answering the posted comments, your maps, your organization, your talk about the hike in the morning, and making everyone feel welcome. With 56 hikers there were many people I hadn't met before but everyone said hello and at the end of the hike everyone was sharing their food from their coolers like we knew each other for years. It's an AMAZING group and it's because of YOU! Thank you, Brian

I LOVE THIS GROUP! This hiking/adventure group continues to get better & better. Eric....buddy... you are the guru! Outstanding organizer with the patience of a saint. Thank you. Dr. Dan the most excellent amusement park ride ever. Thank you. I will look for the bill for the abuse of your vehicle in the mail. I have bruises on my toes! Which is pretty funny when you think about it.

Great hike and off road adventure. Thanks to all the drivers and to Eric for organizing it. I'm actually sore in places I never would have expected today and I have a bruise on the bottom of my foot too thanks to a big rock poking me through my 5 toe shoes.

Outstanding trip.. Let's see.. Great Sunrise, Mud, rocks, water [about 900m in all?]. slip n slime, crawdads, trout, fresh water, some whackin' and climbing, incredible light conditions in the canyon on the way back. Absolutely the best organized, large group trip so far.

    Thx.. Eric!

Thx to everyone who helped out with Willis.. He was skittish as first, but with the help of you all he finally settled down and let me float him down, with the help of donated floaties. Colt, great job hanging back and helping make sure everyone was out, safe and sound... you also got in one last rope swing on the way out in the big pool.. over half way across..Killer

Holy cow. I will remember this hike my entire life. The whole adventure was incredible. Reaching the end of the road at the cliff proved to be quite the accomplishment and we put our vehicles to the test. So glad we all had HC4WD. Many of us will be paying for repairs and body damage. BUT, we made it back the whole way.....LMAO. What an amazing adventure.

ALERT: Trail conditions: "So the road into Hanging Gardens was rough - really rough. We had one truck get a blow out and had to change the tire in the mud, we gave up with that truck at that point. We gave up with my Honda Pilot about half way in, after ripping off part of the plastic under carriage. Even when the road looked "dry" you could easily sink 6 inches into the mud. The Toyota FJs made it further and then we gave up on them and hiked in. It would have been worse had it rained the day before, the roads would have been a disaster - or if it was raining when we were trying to leave." You will be hiking further than planned. Be careful and good luck!
