Buckskin Gulch: Ultra Day Hike Series Part 2: World's Longest Slot Canyon,

Please read the entire post before you RSVP.  This is part of the Ultra Day Hike Series that we are running through the whole Summer of 2014.

ARE YOU READY TO REALLY EXPERIENCE LIFE AND GET SOME?  ARE YOU READY TO PUSH YOURSELF TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND BREAK BARRIERS?  THEN START SIGNING UP FOR THE ULTRA DAY HIKE SERIES LED BY THE TLC HIKING CLUB.  HERE IS PART 2 OF THE 5 PART SERIES.  ONCE EACH MONTH.

The Buckskin Gulch is a fourteen mile slot canyon. Listed as one of the top ten hikes in the world by National Geographic Explorer a few years back, doing the entire twenty-one mile loop can be a challenge and an endurance experience for most people.

We are going to be starting at Wire Pass Trail Head and ending at Whitehouse Trail Head.  21 miles.  Day permits are easily accessible at the Trail head.  If you are wishing to do an over nite experience, this is not the time nor the place to book such an event as we are not providing any infrastructure or information related to that.

We will be staying at the Lake Powell Resort and Marina.  This saves yourself about 20 minutes of drive time and sleep time in the morning opposed to staying in town.   http://www.lakepowell.com/ Meetup place will be at the Resort.

We will need to leave the Resort at 3am.  It will be a 45 minutes drive to White house Trailhead where we will drop vehicles and then travel another 45 minutes to our starting destination at Wire Pass Trailhead.  We should be well under way by 5am.  Plan on bringing headlamps.  Plan on taking 12 to 14 hours to finish this hike.

ONLY THE ADVANCED SERIOUS HIKERS SHOULD EVEN ATTEMPT THIS.  IF YOU HAVE DONE SOME ULTRA DAY HIKES WITH US IN THE PAST, THEN YOU UNDERSTAND.  IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE, PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE SIGNING UP.

There will be a few spots that will require some Class 3 climbs, in the rock jams.  Some rope work may be needed for 10-15 foot climbs.  No rapelling gear.

Be Prepared to be wet.  This time of the year we may get lucky and find dry pools, but we also may find some stagnant cess pools that we may have to trek through.  Bring water hiking shoes.  You have been forewarned.  Bring a dry bag.

The shaded floor in the slots will be 15-20 degrees cooler than the weather on top.  Middle of May should prove to be perfect.

We should return to the Resort around 6pm at the earliest and 9pm at the latest.

We will be leaving Phoenix around 10am on Friday to check in at 3pm.  Grabbing dinner and going to bed.

The last two hikes proved to me how much of this "ultra hiking" is mental. Just crushing to think you're making great time and you're 5 miles from the end to finding out it's 12 more miles. C2C was the same for me. But overall, in retrospect, a great time with some really great people. I hope to be hiking and sharing adventures with many of you for a good long time.

You know it's an awesome, epic hike when there are hundreds of incredible photos, hikers are exhausted and no one wants to ever do it again.......until next time!

Amazing hike . No doubt an accomplishment for everyone. I can now give sand the respect it is due. It is not just the powdery, grainy stuff on the beach. I am happy to say I have done it . Strike it off my bucket-list forever.
Eric -- what else is on your list of to - do 's?

    4 · May 18, 2014

    • Eric K.

There is an interesting list of bucket-lister hikes that go on the familiar Arizona Hiking Resume.....but after this year that list will be significantly reduced......big year of "big" hikes

Just an update from Page... My coworker did this hike last weekend without difficulty, some water was along the trail, but easily avoided. The "rabbit hole" was open, but muddy, so they went over the rock dam, where the rope was already placed. We have not had rain here all week, but that does not mean the gulch will be dry, as there were storms hanging over the area yesterday.

As a side note, I will be joining from Page, and do not mind driving to either trailhead, but hope there is room for me somewhere in the transfers... Thanks!

    May 14, 2014

    • Eric K.

Great. See you at the Meet Up spot at 3am on Sat morning. here should be ample enough room for transfers/shuttles.

      May 8, 2014

  • Laura H.

Okay.....just spoke with REI-PV......regarding the appropriate attire...am more concerned about the footing for this hike....and am going to be purchasing neoprene water socks and some good moleskin. But got some good intel......Between Buckskin and the Narrows.....he said he's done both and Buckskin is tougher going because the water is more muddy......so highly rec'd water shoes that are meshed to keep the debris out, not open water sandles. The Narrows will be easier going, he said.....because the water is more clearer.....so FYI....for what its worth! Eric, any word yet from the Rangers on water level/conditions for Buckskin?

I dont know about Paige AZ but in Springdale they Rent all over town, amazing Water Shoes that keep all water and debris out for $20.00 per day. http://www.yelp.com/b...

      May 7, 2014

    • Laura H.

Thank you Brian!!! :) Yes, have heard that for the Narrows......there are places in town to rent equipment, ie water shoes, wet suits.......etc.......think I found a deal on a pair of Solamons on ebay! LOL!

      May 7, 2014

  • Ross M.

I've got my water shoes, dry bag, moleskin, and electrolyte tablets. I understand 4 liters of water are recommended. Does that amount sound right? I watched the video clip. That's a good tip to watch what you eat for two days prior! I have a Subaru Outback: AWD and medium clearance. From what I understand about the road conditions, that should be great for helping with the car shuttle.

Just to be clear, you can lodge anywhere you wish, however the mandatory meetup location is 3am at the Resort and marina hotel. Although we encourage everyone to stay at the same place as that only adds to the weekend experience, but you can stay where you wish.

As much as I love Buckskin Gulch, this trip is already at $600 counting gas, report living and kenneling for dogs. Plus, no one left to share expenses with. We'll pass on this one but look forward to the other upcoming hikes.

How is the weather while hiking in the slot canyon compared to the weather outside -- considerably cooler? Also how much time/distance of this trek is out of the canyon and in the open where the heat will really take its toll? Also has anyone heard if the 'rabbit hole' is open this year?

Unfortunately the dates don't work out for me to join on this trek but I may try to get out there sometime this year!

Inside slot Canyon it's cooler. The sun does not reach the I side walls. 13 miles of this but it does open up into bigger areas at times. The last 7 miles are in the open sun and wide. If it hasn't rained anytime within two weeks of doing it the last 7miles has about 6" deep sand the whole way and it will be broken up and makes hiking a little harder. If it has rained within two weeks the water table is a little higher and the sand is packed making it easy to walk. The first time we did it in June it was 105° and most peeps got blisters on their feet and heels. Hopefully we hit it just right. If they have had rain make sure you wear a water shoe or one that you don't mind getting wet as the slot Canyon might have areas where we would have to wade through. This is an awesome hike of epic proportions! Also after 13 miles in you come to a confluence where you can replenish water for the hike out. Good idea to bring water filters. :)

RECAP: Yes, it's time to start thinking about this since it's only a month away. Rick Roorda, Brian Mildener and I are sharing a room. As for carpooling, this is still up for grabs it looks like. It will be a 4.5 - 5 hour drive. Can't check in until 3pm. Departure time for the hike is 3am Saturday. I will be leaving Phoenix at 10am. North phoenix at 11am. I really don't want to get in at 7pm and have to go to bed at 8pm type of thing. So that is why I am leaving at 10am. Time to start chatting it up peeps.

So, I'm down to 1/2 of a personal day...I can't leave til afternoon (maybe 1 or 2) on that Friday. Anyone have any carpooling set up yet??? It looks like a really long drive.

    April 16, 2014

  • Joe

I'm interested in this trek, as it has been on my list for a long time. I'm new to the group -- what's the policy on staying at the same location as the group when traveling? I travel a decent amount for my work and using points could probably get free accommodations in Page....if allowed I realize bringing my own car is a must and being punctual at the meetup time would be mandatory.

    February 12, 2014

    • Eric K.

Hi Joe, There is no mandatory requirement to stay where we are at. As you mentioned that places some more burden on your shoulders as far as car pooling and trail meet up times, etc, etc. Also, a lot of camaraderie and good times are made after the the big hike when hanging out together by the pool, etc, etc. But it is not mandatory.
