THE HUMPREYS PEAK SUMMIT ADVENTURE

“A Steep, Rigorous High Mountain Journey……and a Thrilling Volcanic Summit Adventure……to the Top of Arizona”!

As the highest summit in the state of Arizona, Humphreys Peak, an extinct volcano located in the Kachina Peaks Wilderness, prominently stands tall at approximately 12, 633 feet in elevation, and following the Humphreys Peak Trail, offers a steep and rigorous high mountain journey…….with spectacular panoramic views......and a challenging yet thrilling volcanic adventure……pushing past timberline.......to the top of the highest peak in the state of Arizona……and rewarding hikers with a surreal “top of the world” summit experience!

So if you’re up for this high mountain journey and volcanic summit adventure… and a great inner state training hike for Mt. Whitney and future TLC high mountain summit adventures.... .then please do come out and join us for a really fun day and an incredible journey…..to the summit of Humphreys Peak……and the top of Arizona!

Total Estimated Hiking Distance: 9 miles

Total Hiking Time: 5-6 hours

Total Elevation Gain: 3833 feet

Difficulty: Strenuous

Pictures will be highly encouraged along the way. However, we will need to remain cognizant of the time to ensure a safe group return within a reasonable round trip hiking time.

We will take a short break for snacks and pictures and regroup up at the summit.

Please plan to bring at least 2-3 liters of water, plenty of protein, carbs and energy snacks are recommended.

We will meet at the designated meet up location then carpool together to Flagstaff and part at the Humphreys Peak trailhead, with a large parking area available located at Arizona Snow Bowl.

Car pooling with other club members is highly recommended and car pools can be arranged on meet up prior to the event or at the meet up location the morning of.

As Eric has previously stated, there has never been anyone left behind before in this club so please do NOT worry if you do not have a car pool arranged prior to the day of the event.

Due to cooler temps, up to +30 degrees cooler with strong winds and gusts at this high elevation summit…..it is highly advisable to wear or pack appropriate jackets and clothing for warmth and protection.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the high possibility of summer rains due to it being monsoon season in Arizona, FOR SAFETY…….we will be pressing to start this hike as early as possible in order to finish and have everyone down BEFORE 12 NOON and BEFORE any afternoon rain storms start to roll in.

PLEASE NOTE: Weather in the high country can be highly unpredictable and storms serious and severe……highly advisable to pack appropriate rain gear and clothing in case of thunderstorms.

After the hike, we will drive back to Flagstaff where we will plan on having lunch, then return back to Phoenix by mid-late afternoon.

Just walked through the door.......Deb, Rhiannon and myself got pulled off I-17 at Hwy 69.....so we routed it down 89A south....and the back road from Prescott, through Wickenburg, to Rt. 60/93, then west on Route 74 to I-17. Okay guys.....here's the deal......Flag for tomorrow.....predicting a high of 70 with 40% chance of rain. So.....prep for 40's to 50's for temps, and pack rain gear and a wind breaker for the summit. Scattered t-storms are more likely for afternoon.....so for safety.....I'm going to bring up the meet up time to 4:30am.....for a Phx departure time of 4:45am and an arrival at Snow Bowl....by 7:45am. I want to be on trail by 8am......make summit by 11am, and have a safe return by early afternoon......the goal! Any questions, my cell is[masked]-0343......otherwise.....rain or shine.....let's ROCK....and GET IT DONE!!! See ya manana! :)

Hey guys! Weather.com so far reporting mid 70's with 40% chance rain.....but as you know in AZ.....it can always change! So we'll see what reports say tomorrow.....but have said from beginning...I am open to starting earlier, if we need to. I always love a good high mountain summer rain, so no prob for me....but agree with Eric, and also from my own personal experience.....when dealing with weather and altitude.....best to start as early as possible....due to lightning.....the greatest risk. I am looking forward to hiking with all of you.....to the top of Humphreys....highest peak in AZ.....rain or not....we're TLC....and we'll deal with it.....so let's rock and just do it!!! :)

Looks like 30% chance scattered showers for the day. We'll have to keep watching that forecast.

    June 30, 2014

    • Eric K.

Hi Bret, yeah inclement weather is not a deterrent for our group. We are merely concerned about lightning. Rain, snow, wind, etc are all part of being involved with Mother Nature. The earlier you make summit, the sooner you can descend. This should NOT be a smell the roses hike, until you are descending and below tree line.

      July 3, 2014

      A former member

I define inclement weather as lightening. I am not daunted by rain or snow/sleet. Been able to get those hiking in Preskit! ; )

my 19 Yr old just got in from Florida this evening! Planning to spend time with him ...

    July 4, 2014

  • Eric K.

Just to recap: I have done this hike many times, but I will not be leading this on Saturday, Laura will. When doing ANY Summit hike above 10K, it is highly recommended to position yourself to make summit by 10am, as you are typically safe from Thunderstorms until then. After 10am, your chances of T-Storms grow each hour. I never delay or cancel any hike for inclement weather.......that's what being out in nature is all about. We are not a fair weather hiking group. With that said, if there is lightning, you should never attempt to carry on. Lightning will kill, rain, sleet, wind will not.

I recommend taking some kind of ear cover to wear when reaching the summit. At least I wear the compact variety of ear muff as the cold wind just gets right in!

Hi Bret, you are right....if really windy up there (45 mph for instance) you need a totally different gear....gloves, light ski jacket or a good windbreaker, something to keep your upper body, head and ears warm.....poles would help too as the trail is very slippery with loose tiny gravel..... I learned a big lesson last Sunday....lol...

      June 19, 2014

    • Laura H.

Great recommendations guys! Yes, please do prepare for weather for this one.....at high altitude......may be 30's-40's with high winds at the summit! :)
