This is a nice loop hike in the Pinal Mountains that starts in high desert (4500 ft), ends in the pines and aspens at the top of Pinal Peak (7800 ft) then loops back down to our meet-up point. We will start on The Telephone Trail, connect with the upper part of Six Shooter Trail, then take Ferndell Trail to the summit and return via six shooter trail back to our vehicles as it spreads out the downhill a little more which hopefully will help our joints a bit. It will end up about a 13 mile hike with an AEG around 3500, but my numbers are not exact I just know it won’t vary much from what I’m posting. It’s fairly exposed towards the bottom so it might get a bit warm on the hike down so bring lots of water. I think at least three liters would be ideal.
There’s a coffee place in Gold Canyon we can meet up at 5:30am for those interested. Otherwise the plan is to meet at the trailhead at 7:00am. You can download the gpx files if you’d like from the trail links.
Directions To the hike:
From Globe and turn right (south) on Hill St just past mile marker 251. There is a sign for Pinal Mountain Recreation Area. Follow the Recreation area signs. About 2.5 miles from town, Forest Service Road #112 (Icehouse Canyon Rd) intersects with Forest Service Road #222 (Sixshooter Canyon Road). From there, bear right on #112 (Icehouse Canyon Rd). Proceed about 5 miles to the CCC Recreation Area / Trailhead on the left side of the road. The last mile is unpaved, but graded and easily traveled by car.
