Maricopa Trail, East Laveen Trail, Dead Man's Pass, Wing Tips North & South

72nd Hike with the Club:

Want to do another new trail in South Mountain?  Well........ here we go again.......

Plus this should make the West Siders happy.

So this 13 mile (approximately) hike will take us on the New Maricopa Trail.  We will take this over to the National Trail, onto East Laveen Trail.  We take this all the way until it ends at 28th Ave.  We then back track to the San Juan Intersection, and hang a right over to Dead Man's Pass.  Loop it back around via National Trail, and catch the Wing Tip Summits.  The first one will be off to the left and then we come back out and hit the Wing Tip off to the right.  Once we are at Wing Tip South, we can elect to come down the mountain with a little off trail to catch the original Maricopa Trail (this shaves off about 1.5 miles), or we can track back out the Wing Tip, and bring it back via National Trail to Maricopa Trail.

I will classify this as Difficult because of the mileage.  The terrain wont be an issue, but 13 miles is still 13 miles.  And we will be keeping a decent pace and will probably have several pace groups as we often do.

We will drive over to the Trail head from the casino..... a whole 2 minute drive.

We hiked the further most western part of South Mountain today. Great time in the rain. Got out of our comfort zone quite a bit today. Day's like this build character. Loved the Ridge hike on the way back.

Update on Weather: Only 50% chance of rain now. You know how it goes in Phoenix.......if we get rain, we're lucky. Don't be surprised if you wake up and see no rain or just chicken shit rain.

For those that may not have hiked with us before or are just curious: If it rains, we still hike. I am not a fair weather hiker. They are calling for a 70% chance of rain as of right now and around 10am it is supposed to be a heavy rain. We will be done by 10am....or we should be anyhow. With it being Phoenix, we will be lucky to see that, but I know some folks don't like to get cold or be wet and try to dial that in the night before. "You only grow when you are outside the comfort zone." Anyhow, I will be there at 7am, ready to run/hike..... Saddle up and get your fitness on..... Run naked, then you don't need a bath......... jk

Hi Eric, we are expecting heavy rain tomorrow. Will we still be hiking?

Oh yeah. I do not cancel hikes for inclement weather.

Hey guys, When I mapped this out via Google Maps, it is saying it is only 9 miles. Sorry. We should be done much quicker than a 13 miler.

There are several turn offs on this hike, so we will all need to keep a decent pace. If people go to far ahead, they could get lost, but if you are going on this hike you must know that we are going to be moving at a decent pace. This hike will require you to trail run in certain places or walk fast.

Anyone wanna carpool from Queen Creek, Gilbert, Chandler area...want to go, don't want to drive the full 40 miles each way. Will happily help pay for gas though.

Approximately how long will this hike take?

    January 13, 2013

    • Eric K.

My guess would be anywhere from 3 1/2 to 5 hours. I will probably bring a full blown P/B sandwich for this one. I would like to keep one heck of a pace on this one, because it is all easy trail stuff.
