Pre-Christmas Bell Pass/East End/Tom's Thumb Loop hike

68th hike of the club:

Let's have a pre-Christmas adventure in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. We'll start at the Gateway Trailhead, taking Gateway to Bell Pass, take a short break on the saddle at Bell Pass, hike over to the East End Trail and take that up to Tom's Thumb. We'll take a snack and pictures break up at Tom's Thumb and enjoy the views up there. We'll take Tom's Thumb trail down, to Windgate, to Gateway and back to the Gateway parking area. The hike is approx. 13 miles roundtrip. We'll have a good climb up to the saddle on Bell Pass, then another good climb up East End to Tom's Thumb.

Wear a Santa hat, an elf hat or an entire Christmas outfit if you like............or just join in for a good hiking workout and adventure. Dress layered, as we might have some wind on the Bell Pass Saddle, and up at Tom's Thumb. Bring plenty of water, use sunscreen and wear good sturdy hiking shoes that have good traction. Bring your cameras too!! We can work out carpool locations if needed, but there are good parking facilities at the Gateway area. We can go to lunch somewhere close by afterwards as well. The meetup time is to start the hike from the Gateway Trailhead. They have very good bathroom facilities at the Gateway Trailhead too.

Thanks for letting me know. I think I will cancel as well because of the weather. I have already miss too much time from work and can't afford to get sick either. Hope to meet you on the next hike.

Looks like it will be much colder than it has been when we start, so dress warm and layered. Remember that you can get dehydrated in colder weather just as easily as in warmer weather, so bring plenty of water. Mine is a 3liter Camelbak. We'll wait 15 minutes for everyone to arrive, stretch and use the bathrooms, so it will probably be closer to 8 when we start. We'll be in shade most of the way up Bell Pass, but will probably be in sunlight going up East End. Looks like winter is finally here!!!
