The National Trail Challenge - Just Do It - SO MO Style!

81st Hike with the Group:

Hello Fellow hikers,

So I have been asked to do this hike now for quite some time. So, here we go. We will meet at the Vee Quiva Casino Parking Lot, where we will be dropping vehicles and consolidating to drive back over to the East side of South Mountain and begin our hike at The National Trail in E Pima Canyon Rd Parking Lot. From here we will make our journey across South Mountain via the National Trail/Maricopa Trail, which will take us all the way over to the Vee Quiva Casino Parking Lot where we dropped our cars.

This is approximately 17 miles. It does get a little tricky near the end on making sure you make the correct turns to stay on the National/Maricopa Trail, or you will get turned around.

Please make sure you Car Pool with someone in your pace group. Please make sure you can read a map so you don't make a wrong turn near the end and end up on Gila Trail. When National Trail runs into Gila Trail, make a right and stay on National Trail. Then over near the end, where National Trail splits and you can either take National Trail or Maricopa Trail, near the San Juan Road, take Maricopa Trail to the left, or otherwise you will end up at San Juan Lookout and not the Casino. If you end up at San Juan Lookout you missed the turn off. Logistically, it is way better to park over at the casino, seeing San Juan is only open to motorized traffic, once a month. Plus the casino will have a restaurant for us to eat at once done. Security in the parking lot.

Vee Quiva Casino has more amenities and is safer to let a car than Estrella Dr or San Juan Lookout.

We will be taking the minor bypass through Hidden Valley and Fat Mans Pass along the way...... can't miss that!

Rated Difficult.

Brunch at the Estrella Deli inside the Casino afterwards.

Eric- even though we never saw you - Rick and I did the double starting at the Casino at 2am- The first half took us 4hrs 50min. We finished the total trip in 11hrs 11min over 30 miles and 5,600 feet of climbing. The park was closed to traffic until 10am so it was strange not seeing anyone for so long. Good times!
