I've priced it as an organized event, but also offered a "pay what you can" option for those who are short on cash. The events we run will always be $5 or PWC so that the group doesn't "go under" as the other larger group was suffering from. There are expenses in running the meetup, (monthly fees to MEETUP.com) and it's something we discussed at the last meetup.. and the members all felt it wasn't a big issue, but would really help with the funding of our group! Hope this makes sense. :D
