San Diego's First Fig Fiesta

We are having a gathering on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Encanto Farms Nursery. It will be an opportunity for fig aficianados from near and far to gather and get better acquainted. Anticipated activities include workshops, exchanging ideas, swapping plants, plant sales, lunch, and, if the weather cooperates, fig tasting. There are now over 1000 varieties in the Figs 4 Fun Collection, and this hopefully will be a year for many of the newer ones to fruit for the first time.

Reservations are required and attendance will be limited to 50 fig lovers due to the size and nature of the venue. Cost for the 2013 Fig Fiesta will be a $50 donation to the Foundation and will include lunch.

We would encourage people to bring something to add to the occasion, such as fruit, a salad, favorite munchies or a dessert. Maybe an opportunity to try out your soon-to-be favorite fig recipe?

I have access to a large 50-year-old Portuguese fig that I can get lots of cuttings from. It's similar to a Mission in taste and color. Who is teaching fig propagation in Jan? I have several techniques under my belt I'm willing to share.

I am making fig ice cream, a fig and pistachio goat cheese cake and possibly some figs stuffed with cheese, nuts, wrapped in prosciutto and bbq'ed on a rosemary skewer...depends on how many figs I have available.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
