Monthly Propagation Sunday/ Grapes and Figs

  • Jan 19, 2014 · 3:00 PM
  • Marianne's

This month, we are going for Figs and Grapes. If you have cuttings from either of these plants (or other's which are easy to propagate from cuttings and are dormant right now), please bring as much plant material as you can.

We would love for everybody to be able to go home with as many starts of new trees as they want, have plenty of extra's to give away at later meetings and to build surplus we can donate to community gardens, the public food forest getting started in Spring Valley, to daycare centers who want to grow more of the food they are giving to the kids they care for - you get the picture!

Meeting are the 3rd Sunday of the month starting at 3pm. We will present and practice different propagation techniques throughout the year, including grafting, air layering, starting plants from seed, cuttings and so forth. More details about each meeting are announced closer to the date.
We always like to share refreshments, so, bring what you got. Donations are highly appreciated to cover cost of materials we purchase, such as seeds, potting soil, printing of handouts and so forth.

What is this month's subject? Now is a great time to start figs with cuttings. I can demo a couple different techniques if anyone is interested.

Hi Marianne, Yes I can give a demo this Sunday. I have access to a black fig from Portugal. I don't know the name but it's similar to a Black Mission...even made a good wine. ;-) I will bring the supplies needed too (ziplock bags, sphagnum moss or coir, cuttings and black sharpie pen). How many people do you expect?

IT was a Duarte peach.. like the city on the Rose Parade route! NOT a Georgia Peach... that I brought the cuttings from.

I searched the google, but no info on a Duarte peach. Do you have any specifics about it such as chill hours, flavor, etc? Is this from a tree in your yard, or from someone else?
