March meetup to discuss Burial Rites, by Hannah Kent

  • Mar 13, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members says...

"In northern Iceland, 1829, Agnes Magnúsdóttir is condemned to death for her part in the brutal murder of two men.

Agnes is sent to wait out the months leading up to her execution on the farm of district officer Jón Jónsson, his wife and their two daughters. Horrified to have a convicted murderess in their midst, the family avoid contact with Agnes. Only Tóti, the young assistant priest appointed her spiritual guardian, will listen to Agnes’s side of the story.

As the year progresses and the hardships of rural life force everyone to work side by side, the family’s attitude to Agnes starts to change, until one winter night, she begins her whispered confession to them, and they realize that all is not as they had assumed.

Based on a true story, Burial Rites is an astonishing and moving novel about the truths we claim to know and the ways in which we interpret what we’re told. In beautiful, cut-glass prose, Hannah Kent portrays Iceland’s formidable landscape, in which every day is a battle for survival, and asks, how can one woman hope to endure when her life depends upon the stories told by others?"

I've heard great things about this book - it's on my 2014 must-read list so I'm glad it was voted in! :-) Our runners up were Barracuda (Christos Tsiolkas), and The Rosie Project (Graeme Simsion).

I will be half hour late as public transport is a real mess! Sorry about that!

I just got the March book from the library and in the meantime I've nearly finished April's book so I'm completely out of synch! I have, however, signed-up for the April slot and hope I still remember enough of the book to contribute to the session next month! Have fun tomorrow!

We have a location! Apologies for being so ridiculously disorganised this month! Hopefully everyone can make it along on Thursday to the Prince Patrick; as always, please update your RSVP if your plans change. Looking forward to hearing what everyone thinks of Hannah Kent's work! :-D

Hello. I have the flu so won't be making it in to this talk. I am so sorry but don't want to spread it round.

Hi, Bugger. Have to miss this one. Need to look after my son's shop this evening. Loved the book as well. Pity.

Hi! Does anyone have a copy "Burial Rites" (the book for March) they can lend me? It's very popular, booked out at the libraries which meant I can't borrow a copy prior to the March meetup. I work in Collingwood and can meet people in the city to do a swap. Many thanks. Cheers, ShinYi
