Readings.com.au says...
"Shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize and Costa Novel of the Year, this international bestseller has become a reading group classic. We don’t want to tell you too much about this book. It is a truly special story and we don’t want to spoil it. Nevertheless, you need to know something, so we will just say this: It is extremely funny, but the African beach scene is horrific. The story starts there, but the book doesn’t. And it’s what happens afterwards that is most important. Once you have read it, you’ll want to tell everyone about it. When you do, please don’t tell them what happens either. The magic is in how it unfolds."

Sounds intriguing! :-)

The other short-listed books were 'Half of a Yellow Sun', by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and 'Too Late the Phalarope' by Alan Paton.

Thanks again to Shin Yi and Colin for stepping in at the March meetup and running the show; I hope everyone had a great time. And, as always, thanks to those who updated RSVPs and let us know if they're be late or unable to attend. :-)

This was the best discussion of the assigned book in a long time.

Great to see everyone again. Perfect group-size and nice location although on the wrong side of town for me :)

So sorry to bale out late, but I'm not well folks, so I won't be joining you tonight. I really do plan to be a regular, notwithstanding my recent absences! Have fun tonight - I loved the book!

Ugh.. :( Work has got in the way again. Was looking forward to hearing what people thought but I'll just have to pick your brains next time. Have fun!

Hello All. I was looking forward to meeting everyone this evening, but it looks like I'm going to have to work late. My apologies.

Amazing book I read it last year when in the states where it was marketed as "little bee"
Should increase understanding of our asylum seekers and why we shouldn't be locking up 1000 traumatised children. I can't make it thurs unfortunately

I am loathing this book and the hype that surrounds it. Five Chapters in and it's easily in my top 10 of worst reads ever.

I keep hearing good things about this book... Looking forward to it! :-D

Once again a full meet-up in April... and once again I'm going to plead with everyone to *please* update your RSVPs if you can't make it. I won't be mad, even if you back out at the 11th hour - I completely understand that life gets in the way, people are ill, work's a pain, traffic conspires against us all etc.

But please don't just not show up... we had maybe four or five people simply not turn up in March, and I'm sure there were other members who wanted to join us. It doesn't affect me, but it's unfair to any who do want to come but can't get a place, and it can also make things difficult with our venues.

Please guys... Or else I might turn into a cranky schoolteacher. I will have to scowl, and give detention. And no one wants that.

Overall I'd agree with Bec - humour is not the focus of this book...but there are some wonderful, warm laugh-out-loud moments thanks to the little boy and his adorable imagination.

Sorry, my hubby's b'day! Next time again!

Just a point on the Readings blurb. The book has humour in parts but I wouldn't call it 'extremely funny'.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
