Wildlife & Night Sky Photography with Stephen W. Oachs at the Aperture Gallery!

  • Jul 26, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • Aperture Gallery

Have you heard of the Aperture Gallery in Campbell (The Pruneyard)? Well, it's an amazing place, and that's where the next TWiP Meetup will be held!

Come spend an evening with the owner of the Aperture Gallery Master Nature Photographer Stephen W. Oachs as he talks about the three types of photography he specializes in: Intimate Wildlife, photographing the wonders of the night sky and how to use an average digital camera to capture[masked] megapixel landscape images with extreme detail.

Watch this interview I did with Stephen at the Aperture Gallery.

Thank you Frederick for organizing this, and to Stephen for the awesome presentation. I never ever thought I would be interested in wildlife photography, but oh my I can't wait to get out there and try it out. This was my first time attending the TWIP meetup, and I'm looking forward to continue participation.

Outstanding (and humongous!) pix, informative session that offered some good tips for night, panoramic, and wildlife photography, and an interesting speaker. Bummed I didn't win any prizes though!

Hey Frederick, I just noticed that Stephen never talked about to stitch all those photos together in PS. How do you stitch vertically? Maybe we can follow up with Stephen and have him teach us how? Thanks again for everything

In this case, with limited space, I understand the need to limit this to members of the group. I have a dozen guests I'd like to bring, but I'd be pushing a dozen members out of this very limited and valuable experience.

I see this as a gift to the members, not a recruiting exercise.

    July 24, 2013

    • Frederick Van J.

Thank you Brian. I too have a friend that asked to come... so I told her to RSVP. For limited space events I don't turn on the "Allow Guests" feature in Meetup. Group members will always have precedence over guests in events where space is limited.

If you look around, when you rsvp to any other meetup, it gives you that option to specify.

Is 9:00 p.m. late enough for night sky photography?

    July 21, 2013

    • George Warren Z.

It depends on what time of the year it is and where you are located. You should get an app like "The Photographer's Ephemeris" or "Focalware" and check when astronomical twilight ends (FYI there are three twilights: civil, nautical, and astronomical). Any time after that on a clear night with no moon you should be able to easily capture star fields and trails with your dSLR.

      July 21, 2013

    • Gang L.

Thanks for the information. sunset around 8:20, and I have heard half an hour after sunset is still golden hour for landscape.

      July 21, 2013

  • Robert L.

If I am on the wait list should I show up for the meet up or would it be a wasted trip. I see a lot of posts where others are bringing friends or relatives. Is this allowed since there are quite a few people on the wait list. Or are these included in the 90 attendees.

    July 18, 2013

    • Robert L.

Thanks for the feedback. Although I'd like to attend. Unless some cancel I think I will pass on this one. I can't see standing for 2 hours. Maybe next time if there is a anticipated large number of attendees a larger venue can be looked into. Thanks anyway.

      July 18, 2013

    • Frederick Van J.

Hey Robert, the purpose of this meetup was/is to meet at the Aperture Gallery, so moving to a larger venue would defeat the purpose.
