Virgin Queen Learning Game

Virgin Queen is an epic strategy game set in Europe in the years 1559 - 1598 in which players representing the European empires of the time compete for victory through the use of politics, warfare, imperialism, religion, economics, and secret negotiations. It is the sequel to Here I Stand. For those unfamiliar with either game, it is a card-driven board game like Twilight Struggle, but for more than 2 players. You can read more about Virgin Queen on BGG: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/41066/virgin-queen

Joel has a copy of it and has volunteered to teach people how to play. The game accepts up to 6 players and we are looking for 4 more people interested in learning how to play this heavy-weight strategy game. We are scheduling a separate event for this because the game's average play-time is listed at 7 hours. I expect longer since it will also be a learning game, but after learning you will be able to play either Virgin Queen or Here I Stand.

Once the RSVP slots are full, the players will determine a mutually agreeable date, time, and venue for the game. The venue will most likely be the dining room of one of the participants.

Caveat: Before RSVP'ing, please understand that this game is very long, heavy on strategy, and a commitment for the day. If you feel you may be overwhelmed or may be required to bail before completion, we politely ask you to refrain from signing up for this event. It is always a downer for people playing any game to have to end it prematurely because someone has to leave and that disappointment is magnified for complex games like Virgin Queen when someone has to leave four hours in and the rest of the players blocked off time for playing game to completion.

Alright! The hour is almost upon us! Here's what to expect on Saturday.

After everyone has arrived I'll start with a short high level overview of the game and the goals of each nation. Should take about 15 minutes.

Then, we will assign the power that each person will play. I have assigned Spain, France, and the Protestants to Myself, Randy and Andy respectively, as these powers can be a little tricky, and should be played by people who have done a little homework in advance. The remaining players can either agree on who will play the remaining powers or roll off for them. I'd probably give first dibs to Rachel though, since it's her birthday. For the first turn, I'll just tell each player what they should do and how to do it. The final decisions will of course be up to each player, and I'll be happy to explain how to pursue whatever goal they want, but it's just that I find that there's to many rules to explain them all and have people remember. Better to just get into it!

Looks like venue and time are settled. I will send the address in a reminder e-mail closer to the event date.

Ok, after getting the final confirmation settled, looks like we are doing this on March 15th. If for some reason someone drops, we have one person on the waitlist.

The most popular start times were either late morning or early afternoon, so I set a start time of 10AM. I did not set it too early since a couple of people are driving from further away. If people want me to nudge that earlier or later, just mention it in a comment here.

For venue, we are either at Joel's in Marlborough or Jason's in Sudbury. I am indifferent to the final choice, so I will leave that up to discussion for the rest of the group. Let me know which and then I will make another update to the event page.

I would prefer to host at my place if possible so I can have everything prepared in advance.

Just waiting for surveys back from Joel and Jason, then we can start pin-pointing a date.

Alright, as noted so far, this coming weekend is out, Valentine's/President's weekend is out, and weekend of 2/22 is TotalCon. At Jason's suggestion to help make this easier, I have created and will message each of you with a link to a survey. Once everyone has responded, hopefully we will have a clear date and time to schedule this.

It also looks like Marlborough or Sudbury is middle-ground for the group. Suggestions on where we are going to play?

I wrote in the survey that I would be on spring break the entire first week of March, but I could probably plan to come back a day early (3/9/14) if it proves necessary.

Unfortunately both of those weekends are bad for me.

Excellent! Looks like we have six! Now for the hard part, finding a date that works for 6 people. I cannot do next weekend but would be available either Sat or Sun, either of the next two weekends. If everyone wants to comment on what days they can do, hopefully we can narrow it down.

Any of those work for me.

I would like to play (depending on what date is chosen).

I know Here I Stand well, and have read the rules of Virgin Queen, and I learn better from reading than from listening, so I"ll probably reread the rules just before the event and skip the teaching session. I'd suggest we choose countries before the teaching session, so people know what rules they need to focus on.

I would prefer not to play at Unity. There are a lot of other games that I want to try and get in. I feel like if I played Virgin Queen at UG it would the only one I end up playing. Also my wife is coming to UG and I know she does not want to play it :).

The learning session would definitely be outside of Unity. Joel's Virgin Queen game at Unity is for experienced players.

Possibly my favorite boardgame, taking the title from Here I Stand. I've taught it several times, ran it at UG19 and am running it again at this years UG. Although heavy on strategy, the heart or the game lies in the negotiating and dealing between the powers. Although, some powers are more likely to align then others, alliances are far from written in stone. The freedom to ally with whom you choose, combined with asymmetrical powers that offer a variety of experiences really make this a great game IMO.
