On 13 May 2013, Pat O’Connor and Tom Jordin departed Olympia, WA by kayak and paddled an estimate of 1500 miles taking 78 days to arrive at ther final destination, Skagway, AK. After this epic trip they spent 6 days hiking the famous Chilkoot Trail used by the gold seekers into the Yukon Territory. They arrived back to Washington State by the Alaska State Ferry in the middle of August. They will present a photographic account of this incredible 1500 mile journey at the event.
The Inside Passage is a costal water route used for centuries by the native people living along the coast of what is now Washington, British Columbia and the Panhandle of Alaska region. This route became popular when gold was discovered in the interior of the Yukon Territory in 1896. It is estimated that over 100 thousand people left west coast cities traveling be by boat up the Inside Passage enroute to the gold fields of the Klondike.
This annual event was a huge success last year – the first year in the newly renovated Tacoma Program Center. Bring a potluck dish to share with others, and BYOB. Rick Yasger – ([masked]) is available to answer questions about potluck selections if needed.
See you there!
