Foraging for Salmonberries and Greens with the Pierce County Gleaning Project!

We will be salmonberry hunting and looking for wild greens in Swan Creek Park. We will be carpooling from the St. Leo’s Food Connection parking lot. All gleaned food will be kept by volunteers, this is an opportunity to find hidden (edible) treasure in your area – don’t miss it!

We will be harvesting early salmon-berries and foraging for edible wild greens, red currants, black currants, and red huckleberry!

We will meet at the St. Leo's Food Connection parking lot at 9:30 (1323 S Yakima Ave, Tacoma, WA 98405) to carpool to Swan Creek.

If you would like to arrive on site, we will be parking at the pioneer way entrance, plan to arrive at 9:50

We will have explore, id tips, dangerous dopplegangers, harvest techniques, and recipes. Kids are welcome! 

Please bring bags/tupperware/buckets for harvesting! Long pants and close-toed shoes are recommended.

    Boiled down the red elderberries and strained the liquid for a juice. Very tart, kinda meaty in flavor. No ill-effects noted. I'll be pairing them with another berry, the next time I use them.

      I guess native populations used to strain the seeds, then cook down the meat and juice, mix the paste with oil then form them into cakes for storage. They were always eaten without the seeds ( which do contain toxic components), and I don't think they were considered a dessert so much as an accompaniment to a savory meal.

      I boiled the full berry - seeds and all - first. Then I mashed the berries and strained out the pulp and seeds. I like what Debbie did, with adding sugar and boiling it to a syrup. I might just try that. :)

    Enjoyed meeting everyone and seeing the beautiful nature area. Boiled my elderberries with some water, strained out the seeds and pressed them thru a sieve, then added some sugar. So have a sweet elderberry syrup. Smells good, not sure how will use it. Ate the Miner's lettuce, tasty. Thanks for the education and good time.

    This will be a lot of fun...Sean and I went to the last wild glean, where we learned how to sustainably harvest Stinging Nettles. I also love working with the Gleaning Project, whose mission is to help foster food justice and food security in Pierce County. Learning how to forage one's own food, as we know, is a way to increase one's personal access to healthy nutrition without money being a limiting factor. All ages are welcome, as are all experience levels. I look forward to seeing you there!
