read Paul Tillich's Lost Dimension of Religion

Paul Tillich's Lost Dimension of Religion is a 8-page article that appeared in the Saturday Evening Post on June 15, 1958.  I read it again the other day and was amazed to discover that it is still incredibly relevant.  We will use this as a launch pad for discussion.  This first meeting, we will also make final decisions about our next two or three meetings.  I have proposed that we do some reading on the Bahai Faith in March and Joseph Campbell's The Power of Myth in April but some of you may have other ideas.  I have already provided you with the group's suggested reading list.  Please look this over and mark off your top five.

IT IS SOMEWHAT HARD TO FIND THE TILLICH ARTICLE ONLINE.  THAT BEING THE CASE, PLEASE SEND ME YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS AND I WILL GLADLY SEND YOU THE ARTICLE.

I so appreciate you organizing this group Jeff. I am very flexible on days but cannot meet before 11:00am as I drive from a distance. Either Saturday or Sunday is great and 11:00 am or later is best for me. Looking forward to the 22nd and Campbell!

Very much enjoyed Saturday's people and discussion. Jeff, you had mentioned 3rd Saturday as regular meetings, but your subsequent email said 4th; clarification, please.
I am good with either. I am flexible and would be willing to meet earlier and/or somewhere else if necessary. Thanks for doing this.

thanks for asking, jill. it's going to be the fourth sunday.

Wow, I'm confused. The next meetup is on March 22nd? That's the 4th Saturday, not Sunday.

I am really interested in learning about Native American Indian beliefs and the similarity or lack of between tribes. I think the book suggestion sheet was handed around before I added this. Is anyone else interested?

this is a great idea, gail. let's talk about it at the next meeting.

This wasn't an article that held any inspiration for me but I think it was a good one for discussion.

It was a bit formal and academic, yet was a good starting point for discussing religion.

One of you asked whether we could make the meeting earlier or later. I am kind of a locked in on Saturdays because I have to be in Gig Harbor for work by 1 pm. King's Books opens at 11 am so we are locked in on the other side as well. If we could find a location that would have us at 10:00 or 10:30 then we could entertain an earlier time. Everybody's thoughts?

It was great to see all of your positive comments after our meet up and thank you all so much for your great discussion during our time together. I know that the number of people attending will fluctuate up and down. Some could not make it this time and some may not make it next time but the group was a perfect size as well. We are off to a great start!!!

Thank you so much for hosting this event Jeff, I found it to be such a great mix of people and ideas. So interesting to hear the different religious backgrounds and the journey that everyone made to get to their present place in their beliefs. I am looking forward to learning so much and hopefully getting to know everyone. Would love to get together for coffee after the meetup next time.

I really enjoyed the discussion today. There is a good spiritual/religious diversity amongst the group. I felt comfortable speaking in the group today. Which is a big milestone for me as I suffer from social agoraphobia, and had mega panic attacks in the car before in walked in on my own !

I just wanted to mention that every thing we read I would like to interpret from a sociological perspective. So I will read the book and then look for what various sociologist say about the particular reading.
I'm happy with my religion, comfortable that I can look at other stuff and talk about it. For me it purely educational and social :)

It was great meeting you all today and thanks Amy for the coffee shop recommendation.

So sorry I missed it! I had an emergency and was at the hospital with the bf all night. Didn't get home until 10:30 this morning. (All is well now though.) Anyway, I hope it went well, and I'll see you all next time :)

Jeff, is this a set date and time-like 4th Saturday, 11am? Earlier in the morning (8am) or later in the afternoon would be better for me (2pm). I have Campbell's book and have never finished reading it. I would like the "excuse" to read it!!

I can't make it to this meetup. My family already had a little getaway planned, but I'm reading the article and very excited for the next meetup.

Can you tell me more about this Group.

    February 12, 2014

    • Jeff A.

We are a brand new group. Our first meeting will be on Saturday, February 22 at 11 am. I have made a few reading suggestions for the first three months but I expect we will want to talk this through at our first meeting. There are a diversity of people in this group and we will agree to honor that diversity. It will be clearer what we want to accomplish after our first meeting. I hope this is helpful. If you have other questions, please let me know.

I like the idea of this group and will watch and join in the readings, but I cannot attend discussions on Sat. If the group does break up into two and there is interest in week day or evening meetings, please let me know. I read Tillich's 8 pages and also found it relevant to today. Seems to me that we continue to have to relearn what our ancestor's discovered.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
