The Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol (TBSP) provides information and assistance for backcountry travelers in the Tahoe National Forest and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. In partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, TBSP also provides community education, basic and advanced avalanche and mountain travel/rescue training for ski patrollers, and winter Search and Rescue services in Northern California.

Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol is a group of volunteers dedicated to helping make the Tahoe backcountry safer for everyone. We are all members of the National Ski Patrol, but instead of ski resorts, we patrol the public lands around Lake Tahoe and Truckee. We train all our patrollers in emergency medicine, winter travel/survival, and search and rescue skills. There are currently over 50 skiers/riders on the patrol ranging in age from early 20s to early 60s and in ski ability from advanced intermediate to jaw-dropping rippers. TBSP patrollers get around on telemark skis, alpine touring skis, or on split-boards. We ski the backcountry together in groups of 3 or more every winter weekend from December to mid-April and respond to emergency calls via Forest Service dispatch.

This Meetup Group is a recruitment tool to provide those interested an introduction to the Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol’s duties, activities, training, and community. Members of the TBSP Meetup Group will have the opportunity to participate in patrol ski-alongs into the backcountry and attend monthly presentations hosted by patrol members. The TBSP is always looking for eager, new members and these Meetup events will give you insight into the world of backcountry patrolling.

Important notes: Joining the Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol Meetup Group does not make a participant a member of the Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol. Patroller status is earned following successful completion of the TBSP and National Ski Patrol training curriculum. More information about the Patrol can be found here: http://wiki.tbsp.org/PatrolManual.

To participate on patrol ski-alongs, you must have your own backcountry ski/split-board equipment. TBSP will provide avalanche safety equipment including avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe as needed.
