Sailing and Camping in el golfo, Mexico

  • Apr 11, 2013 · 5:00 PM

Hi, everybody.

Some friends and i are going down to El golfo with our catamarans to do some sailing.  We are looking for some people to go sailing with us and help with the boats.

If you haven't been there before. el golfo is a tiny Mexican fishing village with about 30 miles of undeveloped beach next to it.  It is one of my favorite places.

This is primitive camping on the beach about 10 miles from town with no facilities.  We bring everything we need with us in our trucks.  This trip is restricted to four wheel drive and all wheel drive vehicles only, as we need to drive about 10 miles down the beach.  We will leave Thursday evening, drive to organ Pipe national monument and camp there for the night.  In the morning we will cross the border and be in el golfo in about 3 hours.  We return Sunday night.  Some of us may stay through Monday.  This is generally a pretty cheap trip.  We split gas and insurance expenses, buy firewood and fresh fish from ther locals and camp for free.  The number of attendees will be limited by the number of suitable vehicles that go and how many empty seats they have.

This involves playing hooky on Friday.  If you have to work friday, please don't sign up.  This trip requires a fair amount of planning(arranging boats, rides, etc) and if someone flakes out at the last minute it causes significant headache and extra expense for the rest of us.  Because of past issues, I will be collecting a nonrefundable 50 dollar deposit from everyone 10 days prior to the trip.  This will be used towards gas for your assigned driver whether or not you go.  If you attend, it will pay for part of your trip.  If you bail, it will be given to your assigned driver to offset some of the cost of the empty seat.

Now just a few items to clear up:

First of all, you are going to a foreign country.  This means that you need a passport to return.  The Mexicans will let you in, but the states will not allow you back without a passport.  You must have a passport to join us.

Secondly, you are going to Mexico, which means NO drugs(yes, that means pot!), NO firearms, and NO ammunition.  This is nonnegotiable.  Your vehicle will be (quickly and politely)searched by the Mexican authorities(sometimes with drug dogs).  If you are busted you are on your own.  If I catch you with contraband you will be asked to leave.  If you are a passenger with contraband, you will be left at the side of the road to fend for yourself.  If you are a hunter or a stoner you need to sanitize your vehicle thoroughly before the trip.  Mexican prisons suck.  Shoot your guns and smoke your dope North of the border.

It looks like we will have about 3 catamarans on this trip, maybe 4.  i will be limiting it to 13 people because that is enough for me.  We may have some kayaks depending on who goes.

If anyone has any questions, give me a call:[masked]-5166.
